In 2010, Jan Smiley launched the Carolina Fiber Frolic. Jan had been searching in vain for a retreat-style spinning event near her South Carolina home, so she decided to create her own springtime fiber getaway The event has continued to grow, moving from Charleston, South Carolina, to the Blue Ridge Mountains near Sapphire, North Carolina. Jan organizes several speakers, workshops, vendors, and of course, plenty of time to gather and spin. The Carolina Fiber Frolic has expanded and now offers a fall event (Nov 9-11, 2012.) Scheduled just two weeks after the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair (SAFF), it will be a great time for spinners in the Carolinas to relax and plunge into their newly acquired fiber stashes!

Jan Smiley is an active member of the Piedmont Fiber Guild and the Southeast Fiber Forum Association. She is a talented multimedia artist and works in a variety of mediums, in addition to spinning. She has taught and lectured on quilting and surface design techniques, and her work has been exhibited nationally.

The Piedmont Fiber Guild, originally called the Charlotte Handweavers Guild, has been active for about forty years. The guild now includes members interested many different facets of the textile world: spinning, weaving, knitting, surface design, basketry, and more.
