During the first five days of May, 2013, the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners Guild will hold its biennial conference in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. "Supporting tradition; embracing innovation" is the vision statement that this province-wide guild uses to continue broadening the experiences of its members. The 2013 conference theme is Fiber Optics. The local guilds that participate in the OHS conference have been challenged to create optical illusions in any fiber medium to display at the event. Workshops range from the history of hair work to grant writing to corespinning.
Keynote speaker Diane Gonthier will be teaching felt lace workshops. I had a chance to get to know Diane at SOAR (Spin-Off Autumn Retreat) this year when we attended as mentors. She is a lovely person and does exquisite felt work. Louise Lemieux Bérubé, also a keynote speaker at the conference, is known for her work in Jacquard weaving and computerized embroidery. Her workshop Jacquard Weaving with Photoshop looks great! The event also has a Facebook page.
The Ontario Handweavers and Spinners Guild has been active since 1956 and supports its members through spinning and weaving certificate programs, scholarships, and by connecting local guilds throughout the region.
