The Lace Knitting of Mary Schiffmann

Once upon a time, Interweave published a book of lace patterns by Mary Schiffmann (1908–1996). Although, The Lacy Knitting of Mary Schiffmann (1998) by Nancy Nehring is no longer in print, PieceWork has republished a collection of the original paperback’s treasures in Mary Schiffmann’s Lacy Knitting eBook. This collection features 21 patterns including the lace patterns from Mary Schiffmann’s 10-week lace knitting classes complete with teaching notes.

Mary Schiffmann was drawn to unusual stitch patterns. There are no basic beginning instructions included here. Rather these lace patterns are for the more seasoned knitter. Schiffmann preferred to use Knit-Cro-Sheen and size 1 needles for her doilies, but these lovely patterns would translate well in the yarn and needle size of your choice. The eBook contains several lace edging patterns including Double Diamond Edging, Aunt Jennie’s Shark’s Tooth Edging, and Fern Lace. Also, there are numerous doily patterns to keep your needles clicking like the Star Doily and Freda Frase’s Square Doily.

Mary Schiffmann’s bliss was in the collecting of lace-stitch patterns. She collected over 500 in her lifetime. Her last words to her knitting friends are reported to be, “I spent my life looking for patterns. Don’t you quit.” How lucky we are that she never quit collecting. I think Mary Schiffmann would be delighted to know that her lace patterns are still bringing joy to knitters everywhere.

Happy knitting!
Elizabeth
