From 1909 to 1929, the Ballets Russes was at the forefront of dance. Created by Russian-born Sergei Diaghilev, the avant-garde company tapped the talents of some of the most important artists of the time, such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Igor Stravinsky. The National Gallery of Australia houses the world’s largest collection of the Ballets Russes innovative costumes.
