Yggdrasil Afghan

An afghan worked from the center out, beginning with a square panel. Borders are worked out from the center, allowing for three sizes in the pattern—baby blanket, afghan, and large counterpane bedspread. Cables, grafting, and charts.

Yarn Lion Brand Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton (100% organic cotton; 103 yd [94 m]/85 g): #124 pecan, 9 (22, 37) skeins.
Needles Size 10½ (6.5 mm): 16″, 24″, and two 47″ circulars (cir) and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

• waste yarn;
• removable markers or safety pins;
• tapestry needle.
Gauge 13 sts and 17 rnds = 4″ in St st; 22 sts and 211/2 rows = 4″ in patt from Large Braid chart; 26–30 sts and 36 rows in patt from Leaf Braid chart measure 6″ wide and 8″ high; 91 sts along each side of center square measure about 30″ wide after being joined to border.
