Unique Ways to Have Quality Yarn-Time with Mom

A pink ball of yarn acts as the letter O in the word MOM for Mother's Day.
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

It’s a bit of a cliché, but there is also a lot of truth to it. Young moms can’t wait for a few minutes of peace and quiet on Mother’s Day, while moms of grown children want to spend time with their kids. In my home, that goes for most holidays. When I ask my mom what she’d like for Mother’s Day, her birthday, Christmas—any day, the answer is always “to spend time with you.” And I find myself saying the same thing to my now-grown children when they ask me such things.

With the idea of quality time with mom in mind, I’m sharing unique ways to bring our passion for yarn-y crafts into the mix. These are things I’ve enjoyed doing with my mom in the past, and things I look forward to doing with my kids in the future.

(Side note: I’ll be sending a link to this article to my husband with the note, “hint, hint.” You might want to do the same with your significant other or your children, even your grandchildren.)

Yarn Shopping Day

Rather than a quick brunch on Sunday, plan a yarn shopping day with mom! Suggest a trip to your local yarn store to spend time exploring colorful skeins together. If you’re both knitters or crocheters, you’ll enjoy discussing different fibers and textures, and picking out yarns for future projects.

My mom is a life-long crocheter, I’m predominately a knitter. Despite our crafty differences, I love taking her to our LYS and introducing her to materials she’s never worked with before. An added bonus is seeing first-hand what calls to her, which makes gift making much more meaningful.

Yarn Stash Organization

Surprise your mom by helping her organize her stash. We all know how easily our stash organization can get away from us. Those first steps into the foray of getting things sorted can feel daunting. Take the stress away by turning it into fun bonding time. Ask about the stories behind unique skeins or what projects she’s looking forward to making. She’ll appreciate the thoughtful gesture and enjoy a well-organized stash for her future projects.

Yarn Craft Party

Offer to host a crafting party with your mom and her fiber friends. Set up an afternoon of yarn and snacks and spend the day making together. It’s a great way to foster community and create a fun and relaxed environment with your mom.

A few years ago, I hosted a crochet party with my mom, sister, and a few cousins. We all made crochet flowers together. We turned those into a bouquet that my mom keeps on her fireplace mantle to this day.

Yarn Dyeing Adventure

If you’ve done all the yarn-y things, consider doing something out of the box like a yarn dyeing adventure together. Set up a dyeing station with different dyes, yarn skeins, and gloves, and let your creativity flow. Experiment with different dyeing techniques such as hand-painting, dip-dyeing, or tie-dyeing, and create unique and personalized yarns that your mom can use in her future projects.

Yarn Retreat

Plan a yarn retreat with your mom where you can both unwind, relax, and indulge in your knitting or crocheting passion. Book a cozy cabin or cottage in a picturesque location, bring along your favorite yarns, and spend the weekend knitting or crocheting in a serene and peaceful environment. It’s a perfect opportunity to bond with your mom over your shared love for yarn and create lasting memories.

Remember, the key to these activities is not just the end result, but the quality time spent together. By engaging in yarn-related activities with your mom or with your children, you’ll not only create beautiful projects but also beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.

  1. February can be a dreary month. So it is up to us to determine it’s one of the best. Boys outnumber girls in my family, so we girls select a weekend in February, find an airbnb, and declare it Girls Weekend. My two daughters, one 6-yr-old granddaughter and me, Oma. We craft, walk, talk, sing, craft, do yoga, eat ice cream and craft some more. One daughter introduced us to Galentines this past February. Such fun! My granddaughter declared at one point we couldn’t even TALK about the boys!. That was a challenge.
