Wool Studio 101: Our 3 Favorite Sweaters

With Wool Studio 101, our goal was to take classic, wearable sweaters and make them available to everyone. These sweaters have simple elements that any knitter can tackle. They’re also are sized to at least a 4X, so more people can make a sweater that will fit; there’s nothing more frustrating than finding a sweater you love, then discovering that the largest size in the pattern is 43″. Here are three staff favorites from Wool Studio 101.

A Twisted Little Raglan

A Twisted Little Raglan is the definition of simple elegance. This sweater begins with the Channel Island cast-on to create a beautiful “beaded” edge along the neckline, then is worked in the round from the top down. This sophisticated pullover is suitable for the office or a trip to the theater. Made in pure cashmere, it’s an indulgent sweater that’s heavenly to wear.

FINISHED SIZE 32¾ (37, 41½, 45¾, 50¼, 54½, 59)” circumference at underarm. Sweater shown measures 37″; modeled with 4″ of positive ease.

GAUGE 22 sts and 33½ rnds = 4″ in St st on larger needle.

The Unisex Zip

The Unisex Zip is a great runaround sweater, meant for working in the garden, shopping at the farmer’s market, or going for a hike. It’s worked in a sportweight yarn to create a lightweight, lofty sweater. With a hint of cashmere, the yarn is soft enough for the most delicate wearer, and the navy blue color is flattering on everyone.

FINISHED SIZE 32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)” circumference at underarm. Pullover shown measures 44″; modeled with 10″ of positive ease.

YARN Universal Yarn Bella Cash (60% superwash fine merino, 30% nylon, 10% cashmere; 230 yd [210 m]/1¾ oz [50 g]): #115 peacoat, 6 (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) balls.

NEEDLES (affiliate links) Size 7 (4.5 mm): 16″ circular (cir). Size 8 (5 mm): 16″ and 24″ cir and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS (affiliate link) Marker (m); removable m; stitch holders; 9″ zipper; tapestry needle; sharp-point sewing needle and thread for attaching zipper.

GAUGE 24 sts and 36 rows = 4″ in slip stitch garter rib patt on larger needle.

Fibonacci Rings

Fibonacci Rings is the perfect introduction to knitting a circular-yoked pullover: the pattern on the yoke is created using slipped stitches rather than stranded colorwork, so you never have to use more than one yarn at a time. The heathered yarn is one of my favorites; all the subtle variations create a more complex color. Make it in subtle neutrals with a pop of color, or go wild and choose a bright color combination.

FINISHED SIZE 33¾ (39¼, 43, 48½, 52, 56¾, 59½)” circumference at underarm. Pullover shown measures 391/4″; modeled with 61/4″ of positive ease.

YARN Jagger Spun Heather Worsted (100% wool; 166 yd [152 m]/3½ oz [100 g]): lava (black; MC), 4 (5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 8) skeins; edelweiss (white; A), amber (gold; B), and smoke (gray; C), 1 skein each.

NEEDLES Size 8 (5 mm): 16″ and 24–40″ circular (cir), depending on size you are making, and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS Markers (m); removable markers; stitch holders; waste yarn for provisional CO; tapestry needle.

GAUGE 17½ sts and 22 rnds = 4″ in St st.
