Knits for All Winter Moods: knitscene Wintertide Collection

Join us at Maker Festivals Colorado, the ultimate crafting extravaganza in Loveland from April 10-13, 2024, where the beloved Yarn Fest evolves with an exciting addition of beads and jewelry artists!

Knitscene is getting a new look in 2021: we’re going digital! Three digital pattern collections full of the gorgeous designs knitscene is known for are coming your way this year, starting with knitscene Presents: The Wintertide Collection. Look for the Summer Solstice and Harvest Moon collections coming in May and August, respectively.

The Wintertide Collection is a celebration of cold-weather wear: cozy sweaters, warm hats, and chill-beating cowls. These designs are well-suited for adventuring through the snow or relaxing next to a warm fire.

But the projects in this collection are about more than just adding to your winter wardrobe—you need to enjoy knitting them. Over the years, I’ve found I tend to think of knitting projects in terms of how much concentration they’ll require, and I’m happiest when I’ve picked a project that suits my mood.

To help you knit happy, as well, I’ve broken down the patterns in this collection into three concentration categories.

Knitting in the Dark

Okay, you may not actually be able to knit these patterns in the dark, but you get the idea. These are the types of patterns I reach for when I’m watching a movie, but also need some knitting in my hands.

The Fresh Powder Pullover by Kristen Jancuk pairs super bulky yarn with simple stripes, stockinette and garter ridges for the ultimate in comfort knitting. If you’re looking for something with a simple stitch pattern and lots of texture, both the Fall Line Pullover by Emily Ringelman and the First Tracks Cowl by Lana Jois deliver.

Indecisive Knitting

I’ve been known to spend hours looking through patterns, unable to pull the trigger and just cast-on. Do I feel like colorwork? Lace? Or do I really just want some of that aforementioned comfort knitting? Good news—these three sweaters will give you a little bit of everything.

The Twin Tip Sweater by Sanna Mård Castman features lace, colorwork, and stockinette! If you’re thinking cables, but don’t want to commit, consider the Bluebird Day Pullover by Donna Estin—you’ll get plenty of opportunities to wield your cable needle as you work up the sleeves, but can slip back into relaxing broken rib stitch for the rest of the sweater. The Telemark Mitts by Aud Bergo, take a similar approach—a panel of cables is balanced by a knit/purl pattern.

Tune Out the World

As the counterpoint to knitting in the dark, I offer you the ‘Tune Out the World’ category. These are projects that require a little more concentration and are great for days when you want to block all non-knitting thoughts from your head. Are they hard? Not always. But for me, at least, they generally involve charts, keeping track of repeats, and counting (please never talk to me when I’m counting).

Clockwise from top left: Sastrugi Cowl, Piste Poncho, and Arête Hat

The Piste Poncho’s dramatic cabled panels may require a little extra focus, but you can probably get away with putting on a podcast as you work through the seed stitch sections. If you’re committed to cables, but are looking for a smaller project, look no further than the Arête Hat by Maria Leigh. You may need to pay attention as you knit, but it’s a quick project.

We round out the collection with a personal favorite: the Sastrugi Cowl. This two-tone beauty includes garter, lace, and bobbles. I have a feeling that once you work through a few repeats of this stitch pattern, you may just find that you can knit this one in the dark, too.
