Tips for Attending a Fiber Festival

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

As fiber festivals begin to make their in-person return, it’s time to brush up on a few tips to make these magical events even more enjoyable. Whether you are attending a small festival at the local fairgrounds or attending something much larger, preparation is key.

Before You Go

Check out the fiber festival’s website ahead of time for a list of vendors and scheduled events. Make note of the vendors you don’t want to miss! Once you’re in the middle of all that fiber and activity, it can be surprisingly easy to forget your plan. Having a list (paper or digital) to check off as you go is a huge help. Also, now is the time to check in with online friends in Ravelry and Facebook groups to see if you can make plans to meet in real life.

In the weeks leading up to a festival, look through your yarn stash, patterns, and needles to get an idea of what you have and what you don’t. Take note of the colors, fiber types, and yarn weights that you want to look for in the marketplace. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the event, so have a budget in mind before you go. I’ve heard knitters and podcasters talk about the effect of “yarn fumes,” i.e., wanting to spend way too much money on fiber. I didn’t realize how real this effect was until I visited my first festival market and wanted to buy ALL. THE. THINGS.

What to Bring and Wear to a Fiber Festival

Comfortable shoes are a must! Plan to be on your feet for most of the day. And, of course, wear something you made . Depending on the weather, you may have to forgo your bulky wool sweater and wear a shawl or cowl instead. This is the perfect place to show off your work and to admire other people’s projects.

Also, I always bring a sturdy bag, a water bottle, a snack or two, a credit card and some cash, hand sanitizer, my phone, a small notebook and pen (in case inspiration hits), and a project to work on when I need some downtime. Remember, it is okay to take breaks. Something as simple as finding a quiet corner to share with other knitters or taking a walk around the fairgrounds can really help you come back to the festival feeling refreshed.

Participate!

Watch the fleece judging or sheepdog demonstrations, visit the food vendors to get a literal taste of the festival, walk a llama, take in the alpaca shows (think obstacle course for alpacas), try out a new craft, take a class or workshop, and look for informal gatherings such as stitch-marker exchanges or podcaster meetups.

Finally, talk to the people around you. You already know you have a good bit in common with the other festivalgoers—you are in a special self-selected group of folks who share your love of fiber. These are your people!
