The Dreaded Sweater Curse and Men’s Sweater Patterns

Most knitters are familiar with the sweater curse. If you’re a knitter, you’ve probably heard of it, maybe heard of a few instances when it occurred, and perhaps have experienced it yourself. I feel fortunate that my boyfriend is not a regular sweater-wearer so I don’t feel any pressure to knit him one any time soon. But lately he has pulled out a few from the closet (hand-me-downs from his brother-in-law) and surprised me with how nice he looks in them! And therein lies the tragedy of the sweater curse, my friends. A man in a knitted sweater is a beautiful sight, but you best not think about making one for him! That is, if you want to keep him around.

Of course, this is all very tongue-in-cheek, and I cannot speak to the validity of the sweater curse. I have heard a few stories of . . . um . . . bad timing, but that doesn’t equate to scientific evidence. Because I believe in the magic of a man in a sweater, I’m ready for us knitters to get past this so-called “curse.” Knitscene Assistant Editor Louisa Demmitt is knitting a sweater for her fiancé and I applaud her! She is a fearless wonder of a human being. If I ever muster the courage and yarn to one day knit a sweater for my man, Interweave has a fair variety of patterns for the job. I’ll just leave some of my favorite choices here for your perusal:

Jon’s Sweater by Sarah Wilson
Interweave Knits Fall 2012
Thoroughbred Stripe Pullover by Kenny Chua
Interweave Knits Summer 2010
Deer Isle Pullover by Alison Green
Knitscene Fall 2014
Malaga Pullover by Leah B. Thibault
Knitscene Winter 2014
Terry’s Pullover by Carol Feller
Knits Holiday Gifts 2009
Tugboater Pullover by Moira Engel
Knits Fall 2014

Would you look at all those beautiful man sweaters? All of these patterns are on sale in the Interweave Store, and there are plenty of others for men’s knitwear, if you are feeling inspired to go in that direction.

There are plenty of patterns for men’s sweaters out there to get us over the scary idea that is the “Sweater Curse.” If this doesn’t quite do the trick for you, just go onto Pinterest or Google and search for “man in sweater,” and I think you’ll understand what I’m getting at. You’ll be busy for an entire afternoon.
