Snowburst Beanie: A Soothing WIP to Savor
I am typically not great for starting my handmade gifts early. This year, however, I have a plan: chunky hats. I know it’s not exactly groundbreaking, but the speed with which I am whipping through the Snowburst Beanie, and the accompanying pleasure of watching it appear on the needles, is making me think that the planets are aligned for me to do some damage on my bulging bins of chunky yarn this season.
The sample uses Amano Yarn Warmi, a baby alpaca and merino blend, but I wanted to mix things up and use up some skeins that have been burning a hole in my stash. I got few lovely worsted-weight skeins from Phi Beta Paca at Interweave Yarn Fest 2019, and I’ve been looking for just the right project to use them. It’s a handspun two-ply yarn, with each ply from a different fleece. I love the blue tint in the darker ply, and the delightfully slubby look that makes each stitch an adventure.
I wouldn’t usually use a yarn like this on a cable pattern, but the 1×1 cables and traveling stitches are showing up well against the purl background. Maximal coziness awaits the wearer of this unique Snowburst Beanie!
Between the natural alpaca yarn and the easy-to-memorize stitch pattern, I’m working quickly through the repeats. The cute little diamond motif is a nice goal to keep you knitting, and I’ve almost reached the first one! This will be one gift that’s easy to check off my list—and that’s the goal of the nine quick hat projects in Interweave Knits Gifts 2019. Take a look inside, and you’re sure to find at least one gift that practically knits itself! Or if you have a stash yarn in mind for a recipient, but no pattern, check out this guide to creating your own with the yarn you have.
