|Sponsored| Plymouth Yarn Company does some wonderful alpaca yarns. I made my first afghan out of Baby Alpaca Brush almost 20 years ago and it’s still going strong. Needless to say, I was super-pleased to get a sneak peek at one of their newest yarns: Avita.

For this sneak peek, join me, Allison Korleski, host of Fiber Nation podcast, to meet a very special yarn. Avita is a fluffy cloud-like blend of alpaca, nylon, and sparkle—so fluffy it’s like knitting with baby chicks except no chickens were harmed and this stuff is way more hygienic. The nylon gives the fluffy alpaca fibers strength, while the sparkle gives those alpaca clouds their silver lining.

Sneak Peek: Meet Avita from Plymouth Yarn Company

I got to play with all 8 colors of Avita: the soft blues and golds and heathery grays tame that sparkle into a gentle shimmer. If bling is your thing, though, head right to the red, black, or navy-blue hues.

Personally, I’d use this yarn for just plain stockinette and be perfectly happy. But it works surprisingly well in cables, or even oversized lace patterns. Just make sure you knit that lace on big needles, so the flurf doesn’t obscure your work. One skein is plenty for a hat, cowl, or shortish scarf, but I’d bump that scarf that up to 2 skeins for a generous swoosh of softness.

Notice how the different colorways show the glitz very differently.

At 4 st/in on #9 needles, this yarn works up fast. Knitting with super-warm alpaca in the summer months may seem counter-intuitive, but you can bang out a hat or 2 in record time for quick gifts, or something new and pretty to wear yourself, once cooler temps prevail.
