In early 2019, Candice English, a Blackfeet artist and successful entrepreneur, took a bold step toward addressing the pressing issues affecting indigenous communities in Montana. Fueled by a desire to combat historical trauma, drug and alcohol abuse, poverty, and violence, Candice founded Sisters United with the support of her company, The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers. What began as a monthly initiative to raise funds for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) has evolved into a formidable force for change in indigenous communities.

Today, Sisters United stands as a beacon of hope, unity, and empowerment for Native American women and children.

A Community’s Call to Action

Montana’s indigenous communities, both urban and rural, have long grappled with the devastating consequences of historical injustices. Candice English’s determination to make a difference led to the birth of Sisters United. This grassroots initiative was initially created to raise awareness and provide financial support for the MMIW movement.

In its first year of operation, Sisters United, with the support of the Fiber Arts community, raised nearly $20,000 for organizations dedicated to empowering and supporting Native American women. Additionally, the Sisters United Scholarship was established, offering a $5,000 award to a deserving student from the Great Falls Public School, further promoting education within the indigenous community.

A Beacon of Hope

As the year 2020 unfolded, Sisters United continued to expand its mission. Early in the year, they offered financial support for the search for Selena Not Afraid, a young indigenous woman who had gone missing and was tragically found deceased. In just a few weeks into 2020, Sisters United obtained its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, a significant milestone that allowed them to broaden their reach and impact.

Transformed into a full-fledged grassroots organization, Sisters United has since embarked on a multifaceted mission to uplift and empower indigenous communities. Their initiatives include creating opportunities for indigenous women and children, offering financial support for the search efforts of missing indigenous individuals, and funding essential programs aimed at healing and safeguarding these communities.

Get Involved

Supporting Sisters United is not only a gesture of solidarity but also an opportunity to actively contribute to the betterment of indigenous communities in Montana. There are several ways individuals and businesses can get involved. One of the most direct ways to support their mission is through donations. Sisters United welcomes financial contributions, big or small, which go a long way in funding their initiatives and programs. Additionally, by purchasing knitting patterns from Sisters United or engaging in business collaborations with the organization, you can help sustain their efforts. You can also sponsor Healing Bundles, which are spiritual trauma survivor kits.

As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day, the work of Sisters United serves as a poignant reminder of the strength and resilience of indigenous communities. Their commitment to creating opportunities, seeking justice for the missing, and funding essential healing programs is a testament to the power of collective action and unity.
