Shawls are the perfect addition to any summer wardrobe. They add just the right amount of coverage to protect you from the sun’s hot rays but are also breathable. My favorite time to wear shawls is during the cooler summer nights. I’ve put together some of my favorite shawl knitting patterns that remind me of the best parts of summer!

Spearmint Shawl

When I think of summer, I most look forward to the bright colors of nature and airy clothes. The Spearmint Shawl, made by Laura Reinbach, blends these two aspects of summer together. It reminds me of mint chocolate ice cream, too! The shawl is worked from the top down and involves using a double twisted stitch to create a unique pattern. The fringe edging adds an airy feel for a fun flair. For a breathable garment, use two balls of Universal Yarn Bamboo Pop to make this shawl perfect to layer over a dress.

Avery Shawl

On clear summer nights, you can find me admiring the stars. The Avery Shawl, designed by Norah Gaughan, combines geometric shapes and diagonal lines to create an angular star patterned shawl. To make the star pattern stand out even more, steam or wet block it. The shawl uses four balls of Plymouth Yarn’s Cammello Merino in a grey that pairs beautifully with summer hues.

Whitehorn Shawl

In cooler months, I find myself looking forward to the warmth that summer brings. The Whitehorn Shawl, created by Courtney Spainhower, combines a warm red and blue with a sandy hue to create a cozy accessory. Inspired by the old West town of Whitehorn, Colorado, the shawl features motifs inspired by woven baskets and Latvian braids. This shawl is made by working from the center out and has a wide wingspan. Though the shawl may look heavy for the heart of summer, it is made with The Fibre Co.’s Cumbria Worsted. The beautiful Merino and Masham wool blend will transition well from late summer into early fall.

Desert Sunset Shawl

Summer sunsets are one of the season’s highlights. Cool and warm tones come together to create the Desert Sunset Shawl, made by Amy Christoffers. Muted shades allow for the color-worked piece to not feel so loud. The shawl is created by working from the center neck down and out to the shawl’s points. Slip-stitch creates its lovely texture. Made with three skeins of Hedgehog Fibres Sock Yarn in hunter, rusty nail, and swamp, the shawl marries muted shades perfect for the summer wardrobe.

Titania's Shawl knitting pattern

Titania’s Shawl

I love outdoor plays in the summertime, especially when the sun is setting. This light green shawl reminds me of Shakespearean plays I would watch in college. Shiny green glass beads and knit lace combine to create Titania’s Shawl, by Susanna IC. Worked from the bottom up in rows, the shawl’s sparkling beads are applied using a bread crochet hook. The shawl is created with a skein of Hand Maiden Fine Yarn Lace Silk in artichoke. This piece truly looks like something out of an enchanted forest.

I hope you’re feeling inspired to knit yourself a summer shawl. Do you have a favorite shawl knitting pattern for summer? Let us know in the comments!
