Pause to Reflect with Interweave Knits Fall 2023: First Look

You may have gathered from my previous editor’s notes and some of the articles I write for Interweave.com that I am one who looks backward while moving forward. I enjoy learning about traditions and learning how practices evolve over time. I can’t really explain why, but the fall season tends to be the most reflective time of year for me. Perhaps it’s because fall is the season of harvesting, when we reap the benefits of hard work and take notes for next season.

Given such note-taking and our wish to learn and grow, we set “Reflection” as the theme of Interweave Knits Fall 2023.

As knitters, we constantly reflect on our past projects and the techniques we have tried, learning from our mistakes and successes, evolving our craft, and taking notes for the next cast-on. Looking at past issues of Knits, I see so much change over the years. And there are still more changes on the horizon.

Interweave Knits Fall Highlights

Over the past several issues, we have been refining our pattern style to make projects achievable for a wider range of skill levels. The patterns aren’t necessarily less challenging. Rather, we’re sharing the instructions in a way that supports a newer knitter as they work.

One big way we’re doing that is our new “How to Read & Use Our Patterns” material. It’s a quick reference tool for abbreviations, stitches, and special techniques. Even as an experienced knitter, I’m finding it helpful. 

The Interweave Knits Fall 2023 Patterns: Reflections

The projects in these pages explore reflections in a few different ways. Some projects, such as Vera Marcu’s Cilin Sweater, feature intricate stitch patterns that mirror image with beautiful effect. Jennifer Miller Comstock’s Bevel Light Shawl plays with how light bends and reflects. The Memoir Cardigan, by Evelyn Siatra, is reflective in its classic style, echoing the past but maintaining a modern sensibility. I’ve already cast on for Mim, the cover project by designer Debi Maige, and can’t wait to wear it.

As a whole, the collection floats between then and now in a way that truly feels timeless.  As you spend time looking back at past projects and looking forward to new cast-ons, I hope it’s joyful and fulfilling.
