Pattern of the Week: The Fantastic Fox Family

It’s December 18, and you may be thinking that if you haven’t knitted a gift for someone by now, it’s too late. But behold, I bring unto you a fantastic family of foxes, a forest-themed last minute knit gift that you may not want to give away! You’re only a couple of hours and some yarn away from gifting (and knitting!) bliss.

The Fantastic Fox Family from Interweave Knits Holiday 2017 is the perfect last-minute gift. Sure, you might have planned to make a special someone in your life a lacy shawl or some thick cabled socks, but that ship has sailed for this holiday season. You need a project that will work up in the next couple of days and put a smile on the recipient’s face, and these foxes are just the thing! These would be a great gift for kids, of course, but they’d also make a super-cute stocking stuffer for an adult who loves a bit of whimsy.

The Fantastic Fox Family features foxes in three sizes—small, medium, and large—that are knit flat; the medium and large foxes have intarsia bellies to keep the knitting interesting. Designer Barbara Prime knit hers in actual fox colors that bring an element of realism to these little cuties, but if you’re making these for a child (or you’re just trying to use up some stash yarn), let your imagination run wild! Try a blue fox with a gray belly or a purple fox with a turquoise belly. You can also customize their expressions, although I’m partial to the smiling faces featured in the magazine.

If you’re making foxes for a small child, please read our toy safety article for tips on making them safe for kiddos of all ages.

If your crafting time is short and you’re new to amigurumi, try making just fox one to start; if you’re an experienced amigurumi knitter with a bit more time on your hands, make all three! Here’s the information you need to know to get started.
