Pattern of the Week: Deep Sea Wrap

Living in land-locked states for most of my life has meant a deep fascination with the ocean. I remember my parents taking my sisters and me on vacation to Aruba when I was in middle school. It was our first time snorkeling, and we spent hours chasing after parrot fish, following flounders, and marveling at the variety of life shimmering just under the water’s surface. At night, we’d sit in the pool near the beach and listen to the susurration of waves rolling onto the sand.

How wonderful it was when I discovered that the theme for knitscene Fall 2019 is water. This issue had me gawking over many beautiful, water-inspired designs. As I was preparing the patterns, however, I couldn’t help coming back again and again to swoon over designer Moon Eldridge’s Deep Sea Wrap.

Deep Sea Wrap

I adore colorwork of any sort in a knitted piece, and this one is no exception. The pattern uses variegated sport weight yarn to create a dappled appearance, like light flickering over water. This is coupled with a contrasting blue that ripples through the fabric like tiny waves. Moon used Delicious Yarns Sweets Sport to create the changing colors of the Deep Sea Wrap. The yarn is 100% superwash Merino, which makes the wrap machine washable, and it’s available in 38 different colorways.

Worked from middle of the top edge down, the whole wrap is knit primarily in garter stitch, which lets the gorgeous colors shine through. There is no seaming involved in the project: instead, stitches are held on either side as you work each bias extension on its own.

This gorgeous wrap can be thrown around your shoulders or doubled up around your neck for extra warmth during chilly autumn days. The pattern lends itself to myriad color combinations: choose the tones that call to you!

For my part, I can’t wait to dive into this gorgeous pattern soon.

Remember to count your stitches!
