Pattern of the Week: Backshore Pullover

Throughout 2019, knitscene editor Hannah Baker has themed each of her issues for the four major elements: air, fire, water, and earth (still to come!). With this most current fall release, it is water that defines the projects, each design depicting its own story. Take the Backshore Pullover. This whimsical little number from knitscene Fall 2019 is just fun to look at, with a wave motif gracing the yoke, hem and cuffs.

Within the pages of knitscene Fall 2019, the notes explain that designer Kerry Bullock-Ozkan‘s inspiration for this pattern is the Fresnel lens. Fresnel lenses were first used in the 1800s as the lens that focuses the beam in lighthouse lamps.

The fractured view that results from looking through this lens is a captivating abstraction. You may be staring at water, but it is broken into shards of light and bits of blue. The motif found in this pullover is just abstract enough, a nod to water that comes across as a modern classic.

The body and sleeves of the Backshore Pullover are worked in the round from the bottom up and then the pieces are joined by working the circular yoke. The carefully selected yarn is Rauma Garn Tumi, distributed by The Yarn Guys. Rauma has been used by Norwegian knitters for going on a century. Rauma is great for color work, knitting, or felting, and does not pill. Visit this link to find a retailer near you.
