It Starts with a Basic Knitted Ball

Blizzard Balloon Ornaments by Melissa Leapman
The Blizzard Balloon ornament is a knitted ball with a tassel and a hanging loop.

Melissa Leapman’s Blizzard Balloon Ornament is a knitted ball shaped with short rows, striped with fun color combinations, and embellished with a tassel and a loop for hanging. The ornament uses chunky yarn to make a ball 4 inches in diameter. Omitting the tassel and the loop gives us a perfect starting point for our little pumpkins.

Time for a Stash Dive!

Each pumpkin takes very little yarn, so pull out those leftover partial skeins and choose colors to coordinate with your décor. A variety of yarn weights will mean a variation in the size of your pumpkins. Use needles appropriate to the yarns you choose. Gauge isn’t important for this project. Just make sure your knitted fabric is tight enough that the stuffing won’t show through.

For my trio of pumpkins, I used:

Bah Ram Ewe Pip Colorwork (fingering) with size 3 (3.25mm) needles, for a pumpkin about 2” diameter.

Cascade 220 (light worsted) with size 6 (4mm) needles, for a pumpkin about 2½” diameter.

Purl Soho Tulip Cotton (heavy worsted) with size 7 (4.5mm) needles, for a pumpkin about 3” diameter.

You’ll need some smooth, thin yarn (I used Knit Picks Animation) and a tapestry needle, plus a few yards of yarn for the pumpkin stem. Finally, you’ll need something to stuff your pumpkins. I had some wool roving on hand, but fiberfill or even random scraps of yarn works just fine.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Knitted pumpkin tutorial steps 1-4
Making a pumpkin, steps 1–4

1

Working with your chosen yarn and needles of an appropriate size, follow the Blizzard Balloon pattern to make the basic ball (Photo 1). I ignored the instructions to change colors, but you can make a striped pumpkin if you like.

2

Thread your yarn tail on a tapestry needle and gather one end of ball together, then sew the cast-on edge to the bound-off edge. Leave the other end of the ball open. (Photo 2). There is no need to weave in the tails; you can just tuck them into the pumpkin when you close it up.

3

Turn your ball inside out. Cut a strand of thin, smooth yarn 18” long, thread it on the tapestry needle and, starting at the open end, run the yarn through a garter ridge that extends the full length of the piece. When you reach the closed end of the ball, turn around and continue running the yarn through the next full-length garter ridge (Photo 3).

4

Leave a loop of thin yarn at the open end of the ball, and continue around, running yarn through each full-length garter ridge. These will be your “gathering strings” (Photo 4).

Making a pumpkin, steps 5–8

5

You should end up with a total of eight “gathering strings”, with long tails or loops at the open end (Photo 5).

6

Turn your pumpkin right side out and stuff it, keeping the yarn tails and gathering strings free (Photo 6).

7

Pull on the gathering strings to create the pumpkin shape. Aim to flatten the ball a bit and suggest the ridged surface of the pumpkin. When you’re happy with the shape, knot the gathering strings and tuck them inside your pumpkin (Photo 7).

8

Thread one of your yarn tails on the tapestry needle and gather the end of the pumpkin closed. Bury both yarn ends inside the pumpkin (Photo 8).

Finally, use some brown yarn to make a short I-cord for the stem, and sew it in place on the top of the pumpkin.

Video Tutorial

Interweave’s digital editor, Andrea Lotz, followed my tutorial and made her own pumpkins. If you’re more of a visual learner, check out her video!

Imagine using these pumpkins to prop up place cards or putting one at each place setting as a party favor. Group them as a centerpiece on the “kid’s table”, and let the little ones choose a favorite to take home. These little pumpkins knit up fast, and they make great use of those leftover yarns in your stash.
