Michigan Fiber Festival
Get ready for a 4-day fiber experience at the Michigan Fiber Festival. Held at the Allegan Fair Grounds, this is one of the largest fiber festivals in Michigan. Come for the day or spend the weekend. The fair ground offers ample camping spaces and encourages festival-goers to stay and experience the festival each day. There is a huge marketplace full of unique fiber goodies and workshops ranging from spinning and dying fibers to weaving your own baskets. After speaking with Glenda Plummer, chair of the publicity committee, I can see how this festival is celebrating its 21st year.
Gus: Tell me about the history of the Michigan Fiber Festival.
Glenda: The Michigan Fiber Festival is one of Michigan’s largest fiber festivals and is held in beautiful Western Michigan at the Allegan County Fair Grounds. The Michigan Fiber Festival is a fiber arts celebration that promotes the interests of individuals and businesses related to natural fibers. This year’s fiber workshops begin on Wednesday, August 16th with four full days of classes covering all things fiber related including fiber producing animals and their management and care. The festival begins on Saturday, August 19th and runs through 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 20st. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Festival and promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 100 vendors displaying. There are fiber animal shows, a fleece competition, handspun yarn competition and a fiber art show. There will also be food booths and musical entertainment. There are on-going demonstrations throughout the festival on shearing, herding dogs, spinning and weaving. The festival is a family friendly event with many “make and take” activities for the children. There are camping sites available and plenty of parking.
Gus: Pretend you talking to someone who has never been to your fiber festival, what would you highlight as your “WOW” attractions?
Glenda: The vendors are truly awe-inspiring. There are over 100 booths full of all things fiber related. You can find everything from raw fleeces through ready-to-wear clothing in the market place. There are several buildings full of goodies for sale and they overflow out of doors.
The Michigan Fiber Festival Workshops offer a wide variety of classes taught by some of the fiber world’s finest instructors. Check out the list of offerings on the web site.
