Knitting, a timeless craft that weaves together creativity and warmth, has captivated the hearts of many over the years. Among those drawn to its allure is the talented knitwear designer and instructor, Alexandra Davidoff. Her journey with knitting began in her childhood in Uzbekistan. She explored various fiber arts, including sewing, weaving, fabric dyeing, and embroidery.

Little did she know that this early exposure would lay the foundation for a fulfilling career in the world of knitting.

After studying theater costume design in the Uzbek Academy of Arts, Alexandra moved to the United States, where she pursued a fashion design degree at The Art Institute of Dallas. While knitting remained a skill she occasionally dabbled in, her passion truly ignited when she stumbled upon Nicky Epstein’s book, Knitting on Top of the World (Nicky Epstein Books, 2008). The book’s boundless creativity in knitting designs inspired her, leading to a life-changing moment. From that point on, knitting became Alexandra’s obsession, ultimately paving the way for her to become a full-time knitwear designer.

From Designer to Instructor

Beyond her impressive work as a designer, Alexandra is equally committed to teaching knitting techniques to others around the world. Her dedication to sharing her craft has taken her to places like Rwanda and Israel, where she has left a lasting impact.

In Rwanda, Alexandra collaborated with Handspun Hope, an organization dedicated to empowering women who have endured the hardships of genocide. This inspiring organization provides jobs and counseling to these women, offering them and their families hope for a brighter future. Handspun Hope owns a flock of sheep, whose fleece is spun and organically dyed by the women themselves. From this exquisite yarn, they knit garments and accessories. These are then sold in various shops and markets in the United States. Alexandra contributed her design skills to this noble cause, creating unique patterns for their yarn and traveling with a group of fiber enthusiasts to teach the women specialized techniques. The experience was nothing short of incredible.

In Israel, Alexandra’s love for the craft brought her to The Gourmet Yarn Shop. There, she conducted her Dragon Stitch class—the same class she’ll be teaching at Interweave Escapes Savannah in September 2023. She connected with fellow knitting enthusiasts there, sharing her knowledge and passion for the art. Her ability to break down complex techniques into manageable steps has made her a beloved instructor among her students.

Why Alexandra Davidoff Teaches

Teaching brings Alexandra immense joy. She thrives on sharing her enthusiasm and seeing others embrace the craft with passion. Her favorite technique, 3D knitting, demonstrates her love for textures and blending various knitting styles. Her Dragon Stitch classes, which she developed over several years, allow her to showcase this technique while inspiring her students to explore new creative horizons. The Dragon Lore shawl design, for example, combines the 3D scale technique with a beautiful color gradient and leather tassels.

Alexandra Davidoff’s love for knitting has shaped her life journey. From her early years in Uzbekistan to her travels in Rwanda and Israel, she has found a sense of purpose and fulfillment in this craft. As she continues her knitting odyssey, she eagerly anticipates where this wonderful journey will lead her next, and the beautiful designs she’ll create along the way.
