knit.wear Spring/Summer 2018: Ionian Top

One of my favorite sweaters is affectionately termed “the mullet sweater” around the office, because the front is plain stockinette stitch but the back is a geometric lace pattern. (Get it? It’s business in the front, party in the back!) The striking Ionian Top from knit.wear Spring/Summer 2018 is in the same vein, although I’m loathe to associate it with that unfortunate hair trend (apologies to any readers sporting mullets).

The front of this deceptively simple top is stockinette stitch, but the back is adorned with butterfly lace motifs down the center. It’s such a delightful surprise! If you need a layering piece this spring, get this top on your needles ASAP. It’s great over a long-sleeve top on cool days, as we styled it in the issue, or under a blazer or denim jacket. I would also absolutely wear this on its own on warm spring days (and even on hot summer days!).

Because this top is mostly stockinette stitch—except the butterfly lace and the lovely two-piece hem—it will work up quickly, so you’ll have plenty of time to wear it this spring and summer.
