Knitwear Trends for Fall and Winter 2023

Sloan Dress
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

Trends are ever changing, whether that be in décor, hair, or knitwear. Tracking trends that you may actually enjoy can be a challenge, especially these days if you aren’t ready to see 2000s fashion come back. After looking through popular retail websites, Pinterest, runway shows, and of course TikTok, I’ve come up with a list of top knitwear trends for the fall and winter 2023 season that you will want to jump on. I’ll also recommend some great patterns to help you try out the trends!

Beanies

If you’re looking for a trend that will last several seasons, knit a beanie! Time and time again, beanies are making their way back into cool weather trends. While berets were popular last year, and still are to an extent, the classic beanie is always a good trend to stick to. You can easily make this trend your own by using fun pom-poms, knit cables, or keep it simple with a classic ribbed beanie. Current beanies have a little less slouch than in years past, so go for a pattern where you can roll up the brim to get the right look, such as the Spiced Cider Beanie.

Neck Scarves

Neck scarves remind me of 1950s fashion. Today, neck scarves are once again popular, but not necessarily in the nylon fabric that they once were. Knit neckscarves have been increasingly popular and give off a luxurious feel to everyday outfits. They can be knit in simple stitches or, like the Leaf Cravat, they can have delicate details. This trend is not only cute but will ensure that your neck stays warm on cool, fall mornings.

Oversized Garments

It’s no surprise that oversized, relaxed fit garments are trending for the fall/winter season. It’s the time of the year where you want to be comfortable while remaining stylish in your knitwear. Oversized, long-sleeved sweaters and vests are a cool weather trend I don’t see disappearing anytime soon, so if you haven’t tried it already, now is the time! Pair an oversized sweater like the Doyenne Tunic over a dress and belt it for a high-fashion look or pair the garment with your favorite pair of jeans and casual sneakers for the perfect pumpkin-patch outfit.

Colorwork and Color Blocking

Colorwork never goes out of style, and mosaic colorwork, as in the Mim Sweater from Interweave Knits Fall 2023, is a technique you’ll be seeing. While colorwork in general is popular, one trend I have been seeing over and over again is color blocking in pullovers. Color-block sweaters today are not like those of the 1960s. This trend can be made with whatever colors you prefer, but if you want to really lean into the color trends, try combining pinks and neutrals, or contrasting color saturations for a striking look.

Turtlenecks

The last time that turtlenecks were really popular was when I was a child, so I am excited to see them reemerge. There are many ways that this trend can be modernized for a sleek look. While a traditional turtleneck is a good look, more relaxed fits and trendy chunky yarns give the trend a more modern feel, perfect for days spent in the fall weather. Try casting on to a turtleneck dress like the Sloan Dress for chic fall style, or keep it casual with a pullover.

Add some stylish trends to your collection of knitwear this fall/winter 2023 season! Casting on these trends now will ensure you have them in time for the cool season ahead. These knitwear trends are truly classic and will outlast the hype of current trends. Knit them in your favorite colors or neutrals so they stay in your wardrobe for years to come.
