5 Knitting Techniques to Try in Interweave Knits Summer 2021

A collage of knitting techniques
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

In my biased opinion, a good collection of knitting patterns contains a little bit of everything: garments and accessories, worsted and fingering weight yarns, and a good smattering of knitting techniques to top it all off.

And when it comes to variety of techniques, Interweave Knits Summer 2021 does not disappoint—we’ve got lace, we’ve got colorwork, we’ve got twisted stitches.

Summer Fun with Knitting Techniques

There are plenty of opportunities to learn something new within this issue:

Lace

Lace is almost synonymous with summer knitting! Breathability is important during the sometimes-sweltering months, so it makes sense that a knitted fabric which incorporates decorative holes is an appealing option.

If you’re new to lace knitting techniques, try the Glowing Compass Lanterns by Jenny Williams. These beginner-friendly designs allow you to practice short lace repeats on a small project. The knitting is straightforward, and any shaping happens before and after the lace sections, allowing you to focus on the task at hand.

Cables

While cables may feel like a staple fall knitting technique, there’s no reason why you can’t make them work for summer!

Take the Hidden Paths Wall Hanging by Lana Jois—columns of squishy cables are broken up with a bit of lace. The result is an eye-catching design that lets you flex both your cable AND lace muscles.

The Itinerant Pullover is a simple, square-neck sweater, knitted in white, with flared cuffs and a cabled hem.

Speaking of cables, the Itinerant Pullover gives these intertwined stitches an extra twist. The allover pattern of Bavarian twisted stitches in this pullover pops off the background of reverse stockinette fabric.

Stranded Colorwork

While stranded colorwork is one of those knitting techniques often known for its warmth and cozy vibes, there’s no reason not to create gorgeous patterning in lightweight yarns for summer!

The Novaturient Top by Renate Kamm uses stranded colorwork to create its bold, graphic pattern. There are some longer floats in the chart; make sure you brush up on the best ways to trap floats in your knitting before you get started.

Slip-Stitch Colorwork

Slip-stitching knitting is one of my very favorite knitting techniques. It allows you to introduce multiple colors and rich texture, all while only juggling one yarn at a time.

The Pelagic Shawl by Susanna IC combines good old-fashioned garter stitch stripes with a border of slip-stitch knitting. The result is a truly stunning design that’s an absolute pleasure to knit.
