Knitting Bucket List: Knit on All 7 Continents
Many knitters have a knitting bucket list. Maybe it’s a pattern they want to make, a technique they want to learn, or a skill they want to perfect.
I had a bit of a different item on my knitting bucket list.
My goal was to knit on all seven continents . . . in a single year. 2022 proved to be the year that goal was accomplished.
The Life of a Nomadic Knitter
Travel and knitting are fairly equal on my list of things I love to do. Lucky for me, they can be done at the same time. I never do one without the other.
As a nomadic knitter, I currently live in an RV with my husband and our fur baby, Phinny. Home for us measures 26 feet long, has 4 wheels, and is towed behind a truck from place to place across the United States.
In 2019, we sold our home in Los Angeles and hit the road full time. I had a few international trips planned for the coming years. Well, as we all know, 2020 and 2021 were not the best years to do any international traveling. As those trips were pushed back from one year to the next, it looked like 2022 was going to be the year I could get on a plane once again.

Knitting Bucket List: Plans to Reality
Sitting in our RV, I was planning out what 2022 was going to look like and as I marked each adventure on my calendar, I came to a realization. Due to all of my trips being smushed from three years of sporadic travel into one very busy year—I was going to be hitting up 6 continents in a single year.
I remember very vividly turning to my husband, making him pause his video game, and asking him, “Would it be totally crazy for me to try and get to all seven continents in a single year?”
He laughed because he already knew I had made up my mind. The only continent missing was Australia. I’d figure that continent out later!
A Year of Knitting and Travel
As 2022 arrived, I started off my travels to Argentina (South America) and then to the great White Continent of Antarctica. After a brief rest at home, it was off to Tanzania and Egypt (Africa) and then to Jordan (Asia). On the way home from there, I spent some time in Amsterdam (Europe).

Within the first four months of 2022, I had already set foot on six continents. Which also means that I had knit on six continents before the summer even began.
After a much-needed rest at my parents’ house in Arizona from all of the early travel, we hit the road in our RV and traveled North to Montana and then across the US to Virginia. I, of course, was knitting my way across the eleven states we traveled through to make our way to the east coast.
During those travels, I planned out my trip to Australia—my seventh continent in a single year. Before that trip, I went to Norway for a month and traveled around the Arctic. Now I had crossed the Antarctic Circle and the Arctic Circle in a single year!
Before the year was over, I spent about a month in Australia and New Zealand, which checked off my final continent.
By the time Christmas rolled around, I was exhausted, but a massive goal was accomplished. I had knit on all seven continents in a single year. Countless stitches were knit, miles were traveled, and memories were made.
Would I do it again? Absolutely!

Knitting Inspired by Travel

I have knit on a cruise ship docked on 6 continents and have also knit on the ship when we were sailing around Antarctica. I have never disembarked on Antarctica, but if I got to do that I’m sure I’d be looking at penguins or other wildlife rather than knitting…
Have knit in Asia (China and Japan) and Europe (Portugal, Frane & Spain). Will be kniotting in Amsterdam soon.
Sounds great. Visit Stephen West’s shop in Amsterdam and have a joyful color fix. I think it is Stephen and Penelope Burt you can google Stephen West!
