Knitscene Spring, I presume?

Join us at Maker Festivals Pennsylvania, the ultimate crafting extravaganza in Lancaster from July 31-August 3, 2024, and we will once again be bringing our fiber artists with us! Our festival lineup will have thousands of fiber artists, and jewelry makers!

In case you have not yet gotten your copy of Knitscene Spring 2014, here is yet another fantastic reason to do so post haste: Deductions. That's right, Conan Doyle fans, there's a Sherlock Holmes themed story in this issue! Knitting and Holmes, what could be more delightful?!

OK. Take a deep breath Louisa, you need to calm down.

When Amy first came up with this connection, I may or may not have freaked out a little bit. I love Sherlock Holmes, in a really big way. I stayed up late as a kid reading the original stories, scaring myself silly with the likes of "The Speckled Band" and "The Hound of the Baskervilles." The black and white movie series starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce was a revelation in high school because now I had faces to put with my favorite characters! And then Laurie R. King wrote "The Beekeeper's Apprentice: Or On the Segregation of the Queen," a fantastic take on my beloved characters with the added spunk of a female lead with wit and intelligence to rival Holmes'.

The use of "Deductions" here is a fun play on the word's two meanings. The Oxford Dictionary lists two definitions: 1. "The action of deducting or subtracting something" and 2. "The inference of particular instances by reference to a general law or principle". So while Holmes uses the latter definition, this story uses the former; all of the projects here have had something "deducted" in the form of cutouts. If you're a nerd like me, this word play is not only mind blowing but also tremendously fun. So please take a look at the amazing projects in this story, and then dust off your Holmes volume(s) and settle in for a wonderful treat.
