knitscene Fall 2018: Cate Cardigan

I love cardigans. They’re just so dang versatile! I almost always carry one with me in the summer (you never know when a storm will roll in and the temperature will unexpectedly drop), and I wear them over dresses all the time in the fall and winter. A couple of my cardigans are on their last leg, though, and lately I’ve been on the lookout for new cardigan patterns. So you can imagine my delight when I saw the Cate Cardigan in knitscene Fall 2018—it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for!

Most of you know by now how much I love stripes, and Kerry Bullock-Ozkan uses them in a really fun and unexpected way: the body of the sweater is striped but the sleeves are solid, creating a unique contrast. I know that a completely striped cardi might be too much for some people, so by adding the solid sleeves, Kerry created a slightly toned-down but still playful look everyone will love! Worked back and forth in reverse stockinette stitch, this piece features ribbing along the buttonband and at the hem and cuffs for a little bit of stretch where you need it.

I love this piece over jeans and a T-shirt, but I think it could easily dress up for the office: pair it with a skirt and tights or wear it over a dress for a fun-yet-professional look. If the bold colors in the sample aren’t your jam, I think this cardi would still shine in a more subdued combo. Try navy, gray, and white for a classic look, or keep the turquoise and pair it with a light gray and a charcoal for a cardigan that pops but doesn’t overwhelm. Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock comes in a plethora of colors, so you’re sure to find hues that work for you!

If you need a cardigan to take you through fall and winter, cast on for the knitscene Fall’s Cate Cardigan! Start it now so you’ll have it ready in time for the first chilly day of fall.
