Knits Gifts 2018: Rose Hip Mitts
I love knitting colorwork, but I’m never confident in choosing a palette on my own. I tend to either choose shades of neutral (pretty, but boring) or crazy adventurous tones (exciting, but sometimes slightly barf-y). The Rose Hip Mitts, designed by Jenny Williams for Interweave Knits Gifts 2018, on the other hand, are the perfect balance of subtle and adventurous.
These lovely mitts are all about experimenting with rich colors. Notice how the dark background color makes the other dark colors whisper, the medium colors sing, and the light colors pop! The result reminds me of stained glass—perhaps a lovely rose window in a darkened church, with flakes of snow drifting by.
As far as the knitting pattern itself goes, Jenny keeps it simple so you can focus on your colorwork. A loose fit, simple shaping, and a lack of fiddly stovepipe fingers means the design is a snap once you finish the stranded colorwork wrist band.
A simple knit requires a show-stopping yarn, and the combination of Knit Picks Gloss Fingering and Knit Picks Palette, both made from 100% Peruvian highland wool, catch the eye with their lovely sheen. The colorwork panel uses seven colors to create those shifting hues. You’ll have extras left over, so consider grabbing some extra of the main color and making multiple pairs of mitts, some to give and one to keep!
