Knit Mittens to Bring the Family Together

Join us at Maker Festivals Pennsylvania, the ultimate crafting extravaganza in Lancaster from July 31-August 3, 2024, and we will once again be bringing our fiber artists with us! Our festival lineup will have thousands of fiber artists, and jewelry makers!

Knit mittens have a very special place in my heart. When I was a kid, my mom decided to learn to knit.  So, she signed up for a “Learn to Knit Mittens” class at a yarn shop just down the road from our house. When she brought her project home, I thought it was AMAZING that she was making mittens right before my eyes! I begged her to sign me up, and she took the class with me. The teacher showed us how to alter the pattern so the mittens could fit my tiny hands. Then, we worked up some mother daughter knit mittens together! To this day, there is nothing I love more than sitting down to knit with my mom.

For us, the holidays mean some serious mother-daughter crafting time. We sit to work together on gifts for our loved ones. Knitting brings our family together in a special way. This year, I think I have found the perfect kit to make us some new mother daughter knit mittens.

The Latvian Mittens Kit includes the print issue of Interweave Knits Holiday 2016 as well as two skeins of the popular Brooklyn Tweed Loft yarn in Barn Owl (brown) and Tartan (teal)—one skein of each color. My hands have grown since our first matching mittens, but this pattern is written in a range of sizes for the whole family. (Make them for 5, 7, and 9 inch hand circumferences.) The kit includes enough yarn to make one pair of mittens in any of the three sizes. If you are extra careful with your gauge and switch colors for your folded hem, you could even make both a 5 inch and 7 inch circumference set! Perfect for a mother daughter pair!

Designed by Rebecca Blair, these mittens are worked in the round from the cuff up with an afterthought thumb and a folded hem. They are easy to make, and perfect if you want some added practice with stranded colorwork. They pack up easily, so you can start your holiday knitting on the go.

I can’t wait to get this kit, and sit down to knit a pair with my mom. Who will you make these mittens for this winter season?
