Love them or hate them, the social media push to show you short videos is here to stay. To keep up with the fast-paced, ever-changing ways in which our attention as consumers is vied for, companies like TikTok and Instagram see video as the way to get your attention and hold it. These 30 to 90 second videos are commonly called “reels.”

And it is not just big industries going after our eyes. The yarn and fiber worlds are creating reels just as much as the beauty and fitness communities. Makers on these platforms want you to take notice of their work, connect with them, and support their businesses. And really, who better to produce amazingly creative visual content than makers? In this article, we’re sharing content creators who are producing captivating knit and crochet reels that you must see! Plus, we share an easy way you can make your own reels, too.

India Rose Crawford & Froggy

Knitter India Rose Crawford stole our hearts recently when a reel she created went viral. The short, 45-second, blissful video shows India knitting a small striped sweater while a sweet knitted frog patiently looks on. In the last few seconds, you see frog’s webbed feet pop through the sleeve and its head push through the neckline. Then, he enjoys a beautiful picnic under a bright blue sky.

Since that first viral video, India has shared more of froggy’s adventures—each video getting more and more views. Foggy enjoying a thimble full of tea and a tiny croissant has garnered more than 2.7 million views since it was posted June 18, 2022.

Lee Sartori & Her Crochet Commentary

Crochet author and social media wiz Lee Sartori finds creative ways to produce reels on the regular. From her yarn-filled studio, Lee creates short videos set to trending snippets of audio that are popular on social media. It’s fun to see her translate pop culture to the life of a crocheter and craft business owner.

Recently, when Kate Bush’s “Running Up that Hill” went viral due to the release of Stranger Things Season 4, Lee showed us what it feels like to be caught in an endless loop of making when your yarn just won’t stop calling to you. And we knew that feeling well.

Martina Maskova & Stop Motion Magic

Self-proclaimed daughter of Mary Poppins and Willy Wonka, knitter Martina Maskova creates jaw-dropping reels using stop motion. Stop motion strings together hundreds, sometimes thousands, of still photos together to give the appearance of live action. This type of video requires a massive amount of creativity and planning.

In a video Martina created throughout the process of knitting the yoke of a colorwork sweater, we can see her project twirling and growing row-by-row. To achieve this effect, she would have had to place her work down, snap a photo, pick it up and knit, and then very carefully place it back down to snap another photo. And she would need to do this over and over again, repeatedly. Amazing! The result is captivating.

Make Your Own Knit and Crochet Reels

Does this have you inspired to create your own short fiber videos to share with the community? Are you unsure where to start? Try this quick step-by-step tutorial!

  1. Prop your phone up and film 30 seconds of yourself knitting or crocheting.
  2. Open Instagram, click the + sign, and select Reel.
  3. Import your video and click Add.
  4. When reviewing, click the Audio button to lower the sound on your video to 0 and then click Music. Search for an instrumental song that you enjoy.
  5. Add a caption to your reel such as #thisishowiknit or #thisishowicrochet and select Share to Reels. Boom! You made a reel!
  6. Bonus step, tag @InterweaveCraft so we can see your reel.

I followed those few steps in making the reel above. In it you see a sneak peek at a project coming in the Fall 22 issue of Interweave Knits!
