What You’ll Learn

In this 6 hour class, 3 hours each day, Laura introduces you to the “Novus” construction, her seamless yet structured modern approach to the side-to-side sweater. She’ll cover how the construction works, how to modify the construction to fit your body,  any necessary skills needed for the construction (i.e. provisional cast on, lifted increases, German short rows), and how to plug a stitch pattern or motif into it. (To see examples of this construction, check out her Leio and Novus Jacket patterns!) Then we’ll discuss choosing yarn to knit your sweater, and gauge modifications. In class you will work up a “mini” Novus sweater that will ensure that all the skills needed are practiced and understood.

All the yarn needed for the workshops will be provided in your gift bag.

About Your Knitting Instructor

Laura Nelkin
Laura Nelkin lives in upstate New York, where the sunny season is short, leaving plenty of time to be indoors knitting. Though she has a degree in apparel design from Cornell University, she took to knitting years ago and hasn’t looked back. Laura is currently enamored with lace, and with incorporating beads into knitted jewelry, so most of her designs lean in this direction. She travels often to teach these techniques and more at workshops around the country. Laura has a line of knitting kits, self-publishes patterns, and runs mystery Knit-A-Longs multiple times a year. Her first book, KnockOut Knits, was released in September 2014.

Additional Activities

The Maine Alpaca Experience

The Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm located in Unity, Maine has  been offering farm tours since 2006. As an education center for those wanting to learn more about alpacas they have a very experienced staff on hand to provide tours geared to the interest of the individual or group.  Alpacas are very social and enjoy meeting our farm visitors. They very much enjoy the attention of our farm visitors and of course having their pictures taken. You will have an opportunity to meet our entire herd of award winning Alpacas including the famous Space Cowboy. Enjoy shopping in our farm gift shop filled with alpaca yarn, clothing and gifts.  There are 40 Aplacas here on the farm, it’s a wonderful experience for all ages.

Shop in their store and purchase the yarn from one of the Alpacas that you just met!

The Cashmere Goat Yarn Shop

A spacious yarn shop in beautiful, downtown Camden, Maine.  Our goal is to provide a friendly, communal and helpful atmosphere where knitters and crocheters of all skill levels can take the next step in their craft.

The shop offers a large selection of yarns, including traditional wools, alpaca, cashmere, cotton and other interesting blends. Locally hand-dyed and spun yarns are part of the mix. Knitted samples are displayed throughout the shop. Choose from many free and for-sale patterns. Needles, buttons, and accessories round out the shop.

Beading Happy Hour Session with Laura Nelkin

Laura will also have a “Happy Hour Beading” session and help get you started on her Fetish Kit included in your gift bag.

Fetish is a wrap bracelet and a necklace! It is up to you which you want it to be, depending on the day! It is SUPER easy to lengthen or shorten Fetish depending on your desire….

Fetish’s focal point is a hammered metal ring. It plays with pre-strung beads and slipped stitches and is the perfect summer knit, to make and to wear!

Starting at just $1,995 per person (for a Deluxe Room with double occupancy), this extremely limited event includes lodging at Camden Harbour Inn, all meals, workshops, a trip to The Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm, afternoon tea at The Cashmere Goat Yarn Store, and a gift bag. All taxes and gratuities are also included.
