What You’ll Learn

Fundamentals of Sweater Knitting with Sarah Solomon
There are few things as satisfying as being able to knit your very own sweater. But even if you’ve knit many other types of projects, knitting sweaters involves techniques and a knowledge base that might still be unfamiliar to you. The aim of this course is to provide knitters with the foundation needed to knit a successful sweater that is a pleasure to wear. We will discuss choosing a pattern that will suit you and matching it with appropriate yarn.  We will learn how to read a schematic so that we understand how the finished garment will fit ourselves, rather than the model in the picture.  Most importantly, we will learn how to knit and measure a gauge swatch that will ensure that the garment we knit is the size we want.  We will look at some finished garments and see how these techniques were applied to get the desired result, as well as go through a sample pattern to demystify the conventions of pattern writing.  A discussion of blocking and caring for sweaters will also be included.  This is your opportunity to get answers to your questions about fit, construction and technique from an experienced knitter, to gain the confidence to knit an entire sweater, and to acquire the skills that will give you a pleasing result.

Intro to Mosaic Knitting with Amanda Scheuzger
Mosaic knitting is a fun and easy entry into the world of colorwork knitting – if you can knit two color stripes, you can work mosaic patterns. In this class, we will examine the attributes of mosaic stitch patterns and how they are created, learn how to read the instructions and charts, look at the differences in working the stitch patterns flat and in the round, and we will practice several stitch patterns.

Skill Level: Beginner, with the ability to cast on, knit, purl, bind off

Supplies Needed: Yarn in two contrasting solid colors and appropriate size needles.

About Your Knitting Instructors

Sarah Solomon is a knitwear designer, writer and teacher based in New York City. Her patterns and articles have appeared in Interweave Knits, Knitscene, knit.wear, Wool Studio, Pom Pom Quarterly and Vogue Knitting, and in collections by Manos del Uruguay, Woolfolk, Kelbourne Woolens and mYak. As someone who learned to knit as an adult, she still remembers the frustrations of the learning process and loves helping people to improve their knitting skills and explore new techniques. Her interests include everything from traditional techniques, to colorwork, to fine finishing, with an emphasis on garment construction. She is also an avid sewer and spinner and loves handwork in many forms.

Amanda Scheuzger has been knitting for more than 30 years and designing for the last 10 years. Her designs and articles have been published in Interweave Knits, Twist Collective, Knitscene, Knit.wear, and Creative Knitting Magazines, as well as with independent yarn complies. Amanda’s design aesthetic is heavily influenced by her architectural training. As a knitwear designer, her goal is to create garments and accessories with clean modern lines, interesting details, and unique construction elements.
