Essential Techniques

This is basic knit and purl action with some increases accomplished through short row shaping, with a manageable lace edging knitted on at the end for a bit of interest. If the two primary techniques used in this knitalong are scaring you off, here are some videos to walk you through.

Wrap-and-Turn Short Rows

The Beech Leaf Shawl uses wrap-and-turn short-rows, the most basic type of short-rows, to create the shaping. Basically, you knit the middle stitches of your rows more times than you knit the outer stitches. Here’s how to work wrap-and-turn short-rows:

Prefer to learn through words and images? Here’s a blog post on wrap-and-turn short-rows. If, like Interweave video producer Allison, you prefer to sub German short-rows, we’ve got a tutorial for that, too.

Knitted-On Edging

Think of the knitted-on edging as a treat at the end of all that stockinette and short-row shaping! By the time you finish all those short-rows, you’ll be ready for something new. You’ll cast on a narrow strip of new stitches and start working a simple lace chart along the edge of the shawl, joining the edging to the shawl one row at a time. Here’s how:

Again, prefer to learn through a blog post? We’ve got you covered with a tutorial for the knitted-on edging used in the Beech Leaf Shawl.

We Are Interweave

Our team is knitting along! Here’s a look at the team’s progress so far. Some of us are speedy (and have even worked the pattern before) and others are beginning knitters struggling with short-rows. Wherever you fit along that spectrum, we hope you’ll join us.

If you're knitting along on the #beechleafkal, featuring the Beech Leaf Shawl from Interweave Knits Spring 2015 by @papermoonknits, your WIP might look something like this! Let us know in the comments: how fare have you gotten? This is Interweave social manager Andrea's shawl, right before the start of the short rows. If you're a speed demon like #interweaveknits editor and #knittingnerdcasthost Hannah, you might be much further along (swipe to see). (In fairness, she's made it before!) ⠀ ⠀ If the short rows are giving you trouble or made you unsure you could tackle this #knitalong, head to our stories for a tutorial from managing editor Laura! #weareinterweave #interweaveknitalong⠀ ⠀ It's not too late to join this #freeknitalong —just head to https://bit.ly/BeechLeaf-KAL (link in KnitAlong story highlight) for the free pattern and dig a DK-weight yarn out of your stash! Don't forget to share your progress here on Instagram using #beechleafkal!⠀ ⠀ Andrea is knitting with @mountainmeadowwool Alpine held together with @purlsoho Cattail Silk, both from her stash. Hannah was lucky enough to have the discontinued original yarn, @shibuiknits Maii, in her stash!

If you're knitting along on the #beechleafkal, depending on how quickly you knit, you may be reaching the knitted-on edging! If you haven't worked one before, you might be looking toward it with a mixture of anticipation and dread. We assure you that both the lace chart and the technique for knitting the edging onto the shawl are totally manageable! Check our stories today for a link to a video demonstrating the edging. #knittedonedging⠀ ⠀ How's your Beech Leaf Shawl going? Have you gotten to the edging yet? If you would still like to get your hands on the free pattern by @papermoonknits, originally published in #interweaveknits Spring 2015, follow the link in the "KnitAlong" story highlight on our profile or type https://bit.ly/BeechLeaf-KAL into your browser. The pattern is only free through the month of April, so don't delay!
