Peek Inside the 25th Anniversary Issue of Interweave Knits

Twenty-five years seems like a long time—so long, in fact, that I mistakenly assumed that Knits predated my knitting career. It does not. And although I have no memories of those early issues, I love the idea that the magazines were on our coffee table just waiting for me to grow old enough to notice them as I grappled nearby with my first knitting projects. 

Knits has woven its way into my life over the years. There’s the bag my mother made me as a graduation gift (Kristin’s Favorite Carry-All from Summer 2000), which saw me through my college years. There’s the Coldfield Pullover (from Winter 2016), which I cast on immediately after landing my first gig at Interweave. And then there are the memories of time spent with my mom, flipping through the pages of each new issue. Many good things have come my way as a result of Interweave Knits, and I want to offer heartfelt thanks to everyone who has touched this magazine over the years.

But enough about the past. It’s time to celebrate the present and look to the future. A silver anniversary deserves something special. To that end, we have gathered a glittering collection of projects in lustrous, metallic hues. Maybe they’ll help you mark a special occasion in your own life. Our Ageless Beauty collection focuses on timeless classics that you’ll reach for again and again—those wearable pieces that never go out of style.  

And finally, a note about our feature article “Fibers for a Better Future.” The idea for this article started in a much lighter place: What fun, new, futuristic materials are we making yarn out of these days? But things quickly took a more serious turn—and with good reason. It’s hard to talk about any sort of future without considering the implications of climate change. Fast fashion and the garment industry are wreaking havoc on our environment, and while it’s difficult to think that the craft yarn industry is in any way complicit, there are parallels between the industries that are worth exploring. I believe it’s important to get uncomfortable, reassess our assumptions about our craft, and make better choices where we can. I know I’m eager to try out some milk yarn!
