Houston Fiber Fest
Gus: Give me the overview and a brief history of the Houston Fiber Fest?
Houston Fiber Fest 2017 will be our third annual event. We are a 501c3 non-profit, completely run by volunteers. Though our festival is relatively young, it’s growing very quickly. Houston’s enormous fiber arts community was itching for a hometown fiber festival, and we have been blown away by the response and attendance at our first two shows.
Gus: Pretend you talking to someone who has never been to the Houston Fiber Fest, what would you highlight as your “WOW” attractions?
Our vendor hall is carefully curated to include a divine selection of local and regional sellers from within the fiber arts community.
In addition to our vendors, we have some spectacular teaching talent this year. Chart master JC Briar, creator of Stitch Maps charting software, will be hosting classes for all skill levels on a range of topics from charts to socks to pattern design. The queen of “happy stitches” Lucy Neatby will be making her final teaching appearance in the USA. There are also some great classes taught by Houstonians.
Our Meet-Up Table is a great way to make new friends who share your interests. We will have stitch marker swaps, knit-alongs, crochet-alongs, and discussion topics throughout the day, as well as a dinner meet-up for anyone looking to join a group for a restaurant outing when the vendor hall closes. There is also a stitching lounge in the atrium where you can sit, have a snack, and unwind a bit.
Gus: What are your biggest festival do’s and don’ts for enjoying the Houston Fiber Fest?/
DO: Come ready to learn! Stop by the info booth for a list of classes that still have space available.
DO: Check the schedule for the Meet-Up Table to ensure you are on site for all of your favorite sessions.
DO: Have some future projects in mind as you shop. You’re sure to find yarn for all the patterns in your queue.
DON’T: Worry about attending by yourself. There will be plenty of new friends to make, and lots of things to see and do.
