Holiday Countdown: Scarves and Cowls for Winter
This year, Interweave is helping you get ready for the holiday season with some of our most popular projects from the past few years. Today, and for the next week, many of our scarf and cowl patterns will be on sale to help you find the perfect gift for everyone on your list—including yourself!
Is there anything better than a cozy cowl or scarf to keep out the cold in the winter? Cowls and scarves are often some of the first projects knitters embark on, and I’m always delighted when I return to them.
The Aurelia Cowl by designer Hilary Smith Callis is a delightfully lacey cowl-shawl. Check out the Ravelry page to check out all of the gorgeous takes on this design—and maybe find a little inspiration yourself!

Finished Size 23 ½” circumference at top opening and 20 ½” tall at center.

Sample Yarn TSC Artyarn Tranquility Glitter (60% extrafine Merino wol, 25% cashmere, 15% silk with lurex; 400 yd [366 m]/57 g): #TG-9 tobacco gold, 1 skein. Yarn distributed by Tahki Stacy-Charles Inc.
I’m a big fan of The Lord of the Rings, so I was thrilled to discover the All Who Wander Cowl by designer Kyle Kunnecke, which takes the quote that wraps around the cowl’s center from Tolkien’s work! This piece offers knitters the perfect opportunity to explore color combinations, with a plethora of stranded designs coming together to create the cowl.
Difficulty Intermediate
Finished Size 46.5″ circumference and 14″ tall.
Yarn Weight 3
Sample Yarn Mountain Meadow Wool Jackson (100% merino): charcoal (gray; A), 2 skeins; pinecone (brown; B), denim (blue; C), brick (red; D), and sorrel (tan; E), 1 skein each.
If you’re looking for something with a bit of a twist, check out the Alcova Scarf. Designed by Megan Nodecker, this charmingly cabled scarf is reversible—the fabric looks nearly identical on both sides. Even better, it knits up in worsted, making for quicker knitting!

Finished Size 8.5″ wide at middle, 11″ wide at each end, and 55″ long.
Yarn Weight 4
Sample Yarn HiKoo Simplinatural (40% baby alpaca, 40% fine merino wool, 20% mulberry silk): #032 first press olive, 4 skeins. Yarn distributed by Skacel.
Another reversible project, the Empire Bluff Cowl designed by Bonnie Nurnberger has a two-color brioche-stitch cable pattern. If you’re looking to play around with colors, or hoping to learn a bit about two-color brioche, this would make an excellent project.

Thanks for reminding me of these nice cowls/scarves but it would be nice to have a reference to which magazine issue they are in and I can go dig up the pattern. So I don’t have to go to Ravelry and get lost down that rabbit hole.
While our items of clothing should align with atmospheric conditions, we can still keep up with fashion trends. Thanks for drawing our attention to this. I also like to stress as a pet parent, that clothing our pets shouldn’t be taken with a pinch of salt.
