2018: Woodstove Hat

Hats are my all-time-favorite project to knit, and as soon as I saw the Woodstone Hat in Knits Gifts 2018, I knew it was yet another hat I needed to make. Designed by Anne Jones and featuring a lovely worsted weight yarn, this project will, I feel, fly off my needles; I might, in fact, be making more than one!

I love making hats because it gives me the chance to experiment with new stitches and techniques without having to make an entire sweater. It’s a chance to learn, to mess up, and, if necessary, to start over. I’m feeling pretty confident in my cable skills, so I’m really looking forward to trying out the unique cable pattern in this hat.

I also love making hats because I wear them a lot. Most days during winter, you’ll find me wearing a knit hat. The Woodstone Hat features 4 inches of K1,P1 rib—my favorite! It has just enough ribbing across the bottom to fold it for some extra warmth or, depending on my mood for the day, to wear it hanging off the back of my head. And that large pom will also make it a favorite in my closet!

DIFFICULTY Intermediate

FINISHED SIZE 18¼ (20)” circumference and 10¾ (11)” tall. Hat shown measures 18¼”.

YARN Blue Sky Fibers Extra (55% baby alpaca, 45% fine merino: 218 yd [199 m]/5¼ oz [150 g]): #3524 canyon, 2 skeins.

NEEDLES Size 6 (4 mm): 16″ circular (cir). Size 8 (5 mm): 16″ cir and set of double- pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS Marker (m); cable needle (cn); tapestry needle.

GAUGE 22 sts and 25 rnds = 4″ over charted patt on larger needle.
