2018: Candlelight Mittens

We’ve got so many amazing colorwork mittens in Interweave Knits Gifts 2018 but the Candlelight Mittens by Meghan Jones hit me right in the nostalgia part of my brain.

“A snowy walk in the dark of a deep winter night ends with a long wooded driveway and a single candle of welcome in the window,” said Meghan. “The bright warmth of the orange glow seeps out into the near total blackness of a world in grayscale, welcoming loved ones in from the darkness and cold.”

This story and the mittens both remind me of winter evenings sitting inside, looking out into the darkness, and watching the neighbor’s holiday lights twinkle. They also remind me of holiday bedtime stories and cherished animated movies.

There’s just something so special about coming in from the cold to a warm home with hot beverages and cookies that you love your whole life, just like a mitten pattern like the Candlelight Mittens.

FINISHED SIZE 8¼ (9½)” hand circumference and 9½ (10¾)” long from cuff to tip of hand. Mittens shown measure 8¼”.

YARN Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift (100% pure shetland wool; 115 yd [105 m]/ 7/8 oz [25 g]): #820 bottle (dark green; A), #320 steel (gray; B), #126 charcoal (black; C), #410 cornfield (gold; D), and #1160 scotch broom (yellow; E), 1 ball each. Yarn distributed by Simply Shetland.

NEEDLES Size 2 (2.75 mm): set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS Markers (m); removable m; waste yarn; tapestry needle.

GAUGE 23 sts and 34 rnds = 4″ in charted patt.
