Amy Gunderson is one of our favorite designers; her projects have been gracing the pages of Interweave magazines for over a decade.

We all have our favorite Amy designs, but we thought we’d find out what your favorites are! A look through Ravelry revealed three fabulous faves, all with something interesting in common—they have a “swingy” characteristic.

What’s that mean? Well, read on …

Mirrored Cable Swing Coat

Swingy perfection is achieved by side-to-side knitting.

Knit up in super-bulky yarn, the Mirrored Cable Swing Coat is fast and interesting to knit. The jacket is knit from side-to-side, beginning at the left front edge and ending at the right front edge. Then the sleeve stitches are picked up around the armhole openings and the sleeves are worked in the round down to the cuffs.

Very cool construction here, to achieve a beautiful silhouette, and people have made this up in all kinds of beautiful bulky yarns.

Swingback Hoodie

Oh, the drama!

Sporty in the front, drama in the back, that’s what Amy did with the Swingback Hoodie. Worked from the top down with a fab feather-and-fan panel in the back that makes a pointed hem—this is a simply beautiful cardigan.

The feather-and-fan lace pattern is a timeless classic, and it’s really easy to work. You’ll have it memorized in just a few repeats, which makes for quick knitting. And this is lace knitting that can be done with your knitting group or in front of the TV. YAY!

Olivia’s Cape

Herringbone stitch and leather? Yes, please.

Herringbone, leather, and colorwork come together in Olivia’s Cape. A spectacular piece of outerwear, this cape is worked in the round from the top down and steeked, so you never have to work on the wrong side. (The hood is worked separately in the round and also steeked.)

To hide the steeked edges, the cape is finished off with tidy I-cord edging. What a statement piece this is! Amy outdid herself on this one—the finished and in-progress projects on Ravelry demonstrate truly remarkable knitting.

What’s my favorite?

I thought it would be a hard choice, but when I was looking through Amy’s projects on Ravelry, I found one that I’d forgotten about, and I’m so happy it’s back in the forefront of my mind (and my queue)!

Farmstead Cardigan

Look at that gorgeous lace collar!

This one is swingy, too; it’s what made this theme really come together for me. What are the chances?

My favorite thing about the Farmstead Cardigan is definitely the collar, which the pattern description calls “counterpane tiled edges.” It’s lacy, but with an organic feel, probably because of the rustic yarn used. That yarn is discontinued, but any wooly sport-weight yarn would work, and I think I have something in mind—an alpaca-wool blend that’s in my stash!

The knitters of Ravelry interpreted this pattern in all kinds of interesting ways, just take a look!
