3 Favorite Handmade Button Makers to Grow Your Button Collection

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

All crafters have something that they like to collect. For some it’s yarn, fabric, or beads. For me, it’s buttons. I mean, it’s also all of the ones before as well—but especially buttons. I love going to local craft stores and antique stores in search of buttons to use on my future planned and unplanned projects. One can never have too many! At least that’s what I say. Buttons have many uses in a variety of crafts and are endlessly fun to look at. Handmade buttons in particular can be pieces of art and can be the final touch to add to a project that helps make it shine.

I’ve compiled just a few of my favorite handmade button makers to help you in your search of the perfect buttons for your projects and collection. Personally, I want to add all of these to my button stash!

Ceramic Buttons from DryeGoods

When I was a child, I would dig into my mom’s button stash. Her ceramic buttons were always my favorite, as they featured fun motifs or shapes that would catch my eye. Ceramic buttons are still some of my favorites, and DryeGoods on Etsy makes a large mix of buttons for a variety of projects. Each button is hand-formed, using clay or porcelain. Some buttons’ designs are made by using leaves or even vintage buttons as stamps. Designs decorate the front and back of each button, making them all a little different than the next. I already have my eyes on a few sets for future projects.

Resin Buttons from HatanShop

Sometimes adding a subtle pop of color is all a project needs. HatanShop on Etsy makes their buttons by encasing real pressed flowers in epoxy resin. The shop currently offers five colors of flowers; red, pink, purple, blue, and yellow (pictured above). Buttons are also made in a variety of sizes, starting at 7/16″ to 1″ with sizes in-between. These sizes guarantee that there is something for nearly every project. The handmade buttons are smooth to the touch, come in packs of five and ensure that you’ll have pretty flowers around you, year-round.

Glass Buttons from GlassyFields

Glass buttons have quickly become a favorite of mine. GlassyFields, on Etsy, makes a variety of glass objects, but the buttons are what steal my attention. These buttons are handmade in Michigan from fused glass, making each one unique from the other. The glass buttons shine and some even have a twinkle to them to give them that extra sparkle. The round buttons are the perfect size too, measuring around 1″ across and .24″ thick. You can also find slightly smaller rectangular buttons that are just as wonderful in their shop. Buttons can be made in a variety of colors and tones, and if you have a specific color scheme in mind, they also take custom requests!

When I make a project, nothing excites me more than choosing the perfect set of buttons. It’s the time when the project is almost complete and it just needs that final touch. I know that I’m not the only one who enjoys this feeling. As a button hoarder, it is impossible for me to choose a favorite from these creations. There are many other talented button makers that I have in mind, but these button makers are high up on my list. I hope you enjoy these shops as much as I do!
