His patterns have also been included in collections for Malabrigo Yarns, Noro Yarns, and Cascade Yarns. Lars published his first book of Icelandic patterns, Modern Lopi: One, last year and one of his designs from that book won the Grand Prize at the inaugural Independent Designers contest at the leading yarn industry association’s fashion show this year. What You’ll Learn

Photo from Arne & Carlos’ Field Guide to Knitted Birds published by Trafalgar Square Books.

Arne and Carlos are offering 2 class options!

Option 1: Knitted Birds with Arne & Carlos
Scandinavian design superstars Arne & Carlos will teach you how to knit and purl the Norwegian (Continental) way. Plus, they’ll share their tips for the
easiest method of tensioning yarn correctly to get even stitches and perfect gauge, whether knitting or purling. And you’ll learn how to read a chart, so you don’t have to rely on the written pattern!

From their Best selling book! We all deserve a flock of our own! Learn to knit a covey of feathered friends in this introductory class exploring the basic tenets of the knitted bird, a charming, quiet, and extraordinarily clean species comfortable in all manner of domesticated scenarios. Arne & Carlos provide expert guidance for intermediate and advanced knitters with an interest in hatching their own handmade avian companions. You’ll learn the fundamental steps from beak to feet to tail, leaving you well prepared to spread your wings and explore the possibilities all on your own. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn the art of the knitted bird, as well as essential knitting techniques, from the very best in the business.

Supplies Needed:

  • Yarn will be supplied by Rowan.
  • You will  need filling to stuff the bird and beads for the eyes.
  • Needles: U.S. size 0–2.5 / 2–3 mm, set of 5 dpn
  • Crochet hook the same size as the knitting needles
  • Needle and thread

Option 2: Wrist Warmers with Selbu Pattern (traditional Norwegian pattern)
Using double-pointed needles can seem intimidating to beginning knitters, but authors Arne & Carlos will soothe those fears. Wrist Warmers make excellent and quick gifts for young and old alike! And a project like this is a great way to practice your stranded knitting in the round! No matter what the season or the outfit, keep your hands covered in high style!

Yarn to bring: (DK weight, 131 yd/120 m / 1.75 oz/50gr) in 2 different colors: for example black and white or blue and white. We suggest the following yarns: Schachenmayr Merino Extra Fine 120 or Rowan Pure wool Superwash DK or Rowan Super Fine Merino DK.

Needles: U.S. sizes 2-3 and 4 / 3 and 3.5 mm: One set of 5 DPNs
Homework: With smaller size dpn and main color (Black), CO 48 sts. Join, being careful not to twist cast-on row. Divide stiches evenly over 4 dpn = 12 sts per dpn. Work around in k2, p2ribbing for 1.25in / 3cm.

Level of knitting proficiency required: Basic knitting skills needed. Participants should be able to knit and purl. This project is suitable for inexperienced, intermediate and advanced knitters.

Design Your Own Icelandic Sweater with Lars Rains

In this workshop, we will examine the various components of a bottom-up, seamless yoke sweater. After we have recorded the body measurements required for this type of garment, we will work through all of the steps (and the math!) needed for you to leave with a personalized pattern that you can take home to create your own Icelandic lopapeysa. An assortment of yoke patterns and motif bands will be provided for you to incorporate into your design. Questions pertaining to designing yoke patterns and top-down construction methods will be considered as time permits.

  • Homework required: Homework will consist of preparing a 5″ by 5″ gauge swatch in stockinette stitch using either Álafosslopi or Léttlopi.
  • Skill level Required: Basic understanding of sweater construction.
  • Supplies Needed: Homework swatch, measuring tape and calculator (usually found on most smartphones and tablets). Colored pencils are optional.
