Editor’s Note: Interweave Knits Gifts 2022

Interweave Knits Gifts 2022 - Fannie Bright Cowl and Mittens by Jennifer Owens
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

When my children were toddlers, I started a tradition of making them handmade gifts for the holidays. The kids started calling these gifts their “Momma-mades.” Every year, the items were different. Whether a handsewn quilt for the oldest, new pajama pants in a fun print for the middle one, or mittens in a perfect shade of purple for the youngest, something handmade has always been under our tree for each of them. Until the year there wasn’t.

Stressed by life and world events a couple of Christmases ago, I lost my desire to craft through the holiday season. Adding to my woes was the notion that my little ones were in their late teens and early 20s—they probably wouldn’t even notice if I didn’t make something. I remember managing to squeak out a new handknitted hat for my husband, but that was it.

Importance of Handmade Gifts

To my surprise, when we finished opening presents that year, they each asked a version of “Wait, where is my Momma-made?” Their simple question let me know how much they looked forward to seeing what I made for them, even if they didn’t share their anticipation when opening gifts. Their words were just what I needed to hear to reinvigorate my holiday making.

Interweave Knits Gifts 2022

This year, not only will I be making things for my family, but I’ve also made a gift for you. It’s this issue of Knits Gifts. As you flip through the pages of this special issue, you’ll see that this doesn’t look like the usual Interweave Knits magazine. Rather, I’ve worked with the team to make this look like a craft book. With an expanded page count, the patterns and articles have the flow of chapters and stories. In its pages you’ll find two feature articles, two techniques articles, and 19 patterns that will make 25 unique projects.

My hope is that this issue of Gifts finds a place on your bookshelf so you can return to it anytime you need a pattern for a beautiful handmade gift.

Enjoy!

  1. I still have a couple of things I made when my grandmother taught me how to knit. I have 52 (and growing!) nieces and nephews, and I’ve knitted for almost all of them. I hope they have warm memories of their “Auntie Made” knits when they get older!
