Editor Picks: Our Fave Colorwork Patterns for Beginners

Collage of beginner colorwork patterns
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

If you’re a knitter looking to add some color to your needles but don’t have a lot of experience with colorwork, slip-stitch and stranded knitting two techniques that are perfect for beginners. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite colorwork patterns for beginners that use these techniques, so you can try your hand at something new.

Slip-stitch knitting is one of the easiest colorwork techniques to learn, and it’s perfect for true beginners. This technique uses just one color of yarn at a time; you don’t have to worry about carrying multiple colors of yarn along as you knit. Slip-stitch patterns can create a variety of different effects, from simple stripes to more complex motifs.

Stranded knitting is another great colorwork technique for beginners and more experienced knitters alike. This technique uses two or more colors of yarn to create intricate designs. Stranded knitting can be worked in the round or back and forth, and it’s often used in Fair Isle patterns.

Let’s look at what the Interweave Editors picked as their favorite patterns for beginners!

Winding Path Cowl mosaic colorwork knitting pattern
Winding Path Cowl by Joni Coniglio

The Beginner’s Pick

Gabby Anxer, Editorial Coordinator – Interweave

As a novice knitter, it is common to feel intimidated by projects before even starting them. For me, colorwork is one of the most intimidating techniques. The Winding Path Cowl, by Joni Coniglio, is a fun project with a mosaic slip-stitch pattern throughout. You only use one color at a time to create the motif, so there is no worry about managing multiple yarns. Plus, the bold, graphic pattern is worked with bulky yarn. So, it’s a big return on a small investment of time! It’s my pick as the perfect colorwork pattern for beginners.

Biscotti Sweater stranded colorwork knitting pattern
Biscotti Sweater by Kiyomi Burgin

The Confident Beginner’s Pick

Sandi Rosner, Technical Content Editor – Yarn

When you’re ready to try something more advanced than your current skillset, it’s best to keep things simple, allowing you to master the fundamentals. The Biscotti Sweater, by Kiyomi Burgin, is a great introduction to stranded colorwork. Simply alternating one stitch of each color lets you practice managing two colors in a row.  The bulky-weight yarn means you’ll see results fast. And the bands of colorwork are strategically placed on a background of single-color stockinette stitch. You won’t be overwhelmed by an entire sweater in a new technique.

Iced Chai Hat knitting pattern
Iced Chai Hat by Shelby Goddard

The Advanced Beginner’s Pick

Kerry Bogert, Content Manager – Yarn

Whether you’ve been knitting for 5 months or 15 years, there will always be new techniques out there you want to tackle. For the advanced beginner—someone who has a lot of knitting under their belt but hasn’t tried this technique before—I have a simple, but potentially challenging project for you. The Iced Chai Hat, by Shelby Goddard, will test your ability to combine colors, get gauge, and keep your float-tension consistent while knitting in the round. What makes it easy? It only uses two colors per round and it’s “bite-sized.” A hat is a great project to push your skills and learn without the time commitment of a full-size garment or larger accessory.
