Between the Covers of Interweave Knits

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

2021 marked 25 years of Interweave Knits, a silver anniversary worth celebrating. Our publication has changed a bit over the years. Today, we’re going to dive between the covers and show you what to expect in a current issue of Knits.

Contents

Spoiler alert—every issue of Knits starts with a contents page. This lists all the projects, features, and departments in the magazine. It’s pretty self-explanatory, so let’s keep going.

Editor’s Note

We like to include a few thoughts from our editor about the issue. Sometimes this is behind-the-scenes details on the photoshoot or the issue, or just some musings on our craft.

Maker’s Tools

We use this section to highlight some of the beautiful and unique tools and notions available to knitters. Stitch marker necklaces, project journals—we try to include a little bit of everything!

Maker’s Tools from Interweave Knits Spring 2021: 1) Keep all your yarny projects in order with these gorgeous Project Journals from BzyPeach. 2) For vibrant shades this spring, consider Spincycle Yarns Dyed in the Wool yarn. 3) Carry your notions with you in one of these beautiful Felt Pouches from Neighborhood Fiber Co. 4) This Needle Gauge from Cocoknits was inspired by the tool jewelers use to size diamonds. 5) These charming Woodland Stitch Markers from Never Not Knitting add a touch of whimsy to your projects. More about all these products in the issue!

If you’re in the market for some new knitting goodies, this is a great place to shop in each issue.

Fiber Review

While yarn is prevalent throughout every issue of Knits, there’s always a section dedicated solely to our favorite strands. Generally, there’s unifying theme to each Fiber Review: organic cottons, best yarns for colorwork, cables, you name it.

Galleries

This is the eye candy portion of the magazine — photography-laden pages full of knit goodness. In addition to photographs of each design, you’ll find some project details: the designer, a quick description, and yarn info.

The number of galleries in an issue depends on how we’ve divided up the patterns. Sometimes, all the patterns work in a single story (our Gothic issue, for example), and sometimes we break things up into multiple stories.

The Patterns

Fitting detailed patterns into somewhat limited space is a challenge. However, our Senior Project Editor is a whiz at streamlining instructions and charts. We want our knitters to have exactly what they need to successfully make the projects. Our patterns include charts, schematics, and a link to our online knitting glossary, if you need help with any of the terms used.

Tech Articles

One of my favorite parts of the magazine is the tech article—an in-depth look at a specific technique generally tied to one or more of the patterns in our issue.

I’ve learned so much from these articles, including how to minimize ladders in my cables and how to correct the jog in colorwork patterns.

Feature Article

This is our chance to highlight some of the interesting stories happening in our community. Think artificial intelligence writing knitting patterns, the history of our favorite sheep breeds, and people doing notable work in the fiber community. We’re always looking for new writers and stories: check out our open call for submissions.

Ravelings

Ravelings have been with the magazine since the very start. These short personal essays are meant to share heartwarming stories and new perspectives to help us all feel a little more connected.

That’s it! Though trim sizes, page counts, and staff have changed over the past twenty-five years, we’re excited to be able to keep bringing you the content you love.
