Whether you’re a new knitter who’s admired people’s quickly-moving needles and finished projects on social media or someone who is returning to knitting after a long break, we’re here to help! In partnership with Plymouth Yarn and Clover, we created a video that walks you through the whole process of knitting your first hat.

The sample and video used Plymouth Yarn Encore Worsted for this pattern.

In a mere 54 minutes, you’ll cover enough techniques to knit a very cute hat and a lot of other things as well. First, download your pattern. Next, grab some worsted weight yarn (nothing fuzzy or fluffy, btw) and some circular needles. Then just follow along as we guide you through every step.

My First Hat: Video Instructions

You’ll get basic training on how to cast on, knit, and purl; feel free to jump to 13:00 if you already know all that. Then things get going pretty quickly, because you will learn an optional alternative cast-on sure to keep your ribbing stretchy enough as not to cut off head circulation.

The techniques start to pile up in an avalanche of knitting fun: knit in the round! Increases! Decreases! Stripes and yarn wrangling! You’ll even learn how to use those weird double-pointed sticks where it looks like you are wrestling an octopus. (You’ll find it’s much easier and no cephalopods get hurt.)

Graphic pompom action. We used Clover’s Large Pom-Pom Maker for this pattern.

At the end, you learn how to make an adorable, bouncy pompom. The hold-tight-to-your-seats epic pompom-cutting sequence is worth watching all on its own. Using a pompom-producing gizmo made my day, and all knitters-of-hats should have one.

One of the best things about this video is that someone does all the mathy bits for you. All you need to do is relax and follow along. If there is any downside to this video, it’s that the instructor (yours truly) has an alarming tendency to look like Frau Blucher, just without the bun.

Believe it or not, I was really happy shooting this video.

If you’ve never knit a hat or know a newbie knitter who wants to tackle hat-knitting, please check out “My First Hat.” (And we hope it’s not your last!)

If you knit a hat following the instructions in this video, drop us a comment! We’d love to hear how it went and see your finished object!

Never stop learning,
Allison

P.S. Want to knit something a little easier? Check out our “My First Cowl” video. You’ll get a firmer grasp on the basics, without worrying about it having to come to a point.
