Beginner Sweater Knitting Patterns to Cast-On Now & Wear this Fall
My favorite season is almost here, and I am not even slightly prepared in the handmade sweater department. The proximity of sweater season means that I need to stock up on more yarn in order to start projects. Knitting sweaters in such a quick turnaround is not impossible! These beginner sweater knitting patterns are great for those who want to sport their creations in time for fall.

We’ll start with pullovers and then move into cardigans. Whether you’re a beginner, you know a beginner who wants to learn, or you’re just looking for a quick and easy knit, we’re sure you’ll find a sweater pattern to love.
Beginner Pullover Patterns
Essential Sweater
Knit sweaters with turtlenecks have become a fast favorite of mine. They are easy to bundle up with and add sophistication to almost any look. When looking at the Essential Sweater, created by Jordana Jacobs, it’s easy to determine how it got its name. Everyone needs a bulky knit piece in their wardrobe. The sweater has set-in sleeves and is seamed after working in pieces with stockinette stitch. The large gauge makes it quick to knit.
Gradient Pullover
If you are like me and have yet to start a garment, now is the perfect time! Fun color blocking and gradient come together to make the Gradient Pullover, created by Amy Miller. This easy gradient pullover is worked from the top down and has long, tapered sleeves, also worked in the round. All that knitting in the round makes this knitting pattern ideal for beginners to get their practice in. The ribbing on the edges of the garment gives it a sleek feel.
Lapis Yoke Pullover
Layering sweaters are a staple for crisp weather and knitting pullovers is a great way to achieve that. Don’t let the ribbing fool you on this Lapis Yoke Pullover, by Hannah Fettig. This pullover will be knit and ready to wear in no time, and proves that easy-to-knit sweaters can be interesting too. The seamless ribbed yoke detail adds some flair to the piece that makes it different than other sweaters with raglan sleeves.
Beginner Cardigan Patterns
Lark Cardigan
Is there anything better than functional pockets in clothing? Keep your hands and upper body warm with the Lark Cardigan, knit by Pam Allen. This project calls for worsted yarn, which is a medium weight yarn, allowing it to be a warm and quick-to-knit project. This cardigan is simple and features an easy pebble rib pattern that adds a nice texture. The repetitive motion will allow you to cast off in no time!
Lodi Cardigan
I love having the ability to throw a cardigan on if it’s just a little brisk. The Lodi Cardigan, made by Tanis Gray, is a great introductory piece for beginners looking to practice shaping. This cardigan is knit top-down with raglan construction. Garter stitch edges and garter ridge accents make for easy details. The subtle details and minor shaping make this a project you’ll want to add to your list. Leave it open, or button it up for a cute and cozy feel.
Because these sweaters are quick-knits, they are perfect to add to your “to-make list” before fall. You can complete them in minimal time and they are great projects for beginners to practice and learn skills—as well as for those who have been knitting for years and are looking for a straightforward project.
Happy Knitting!
