A Knitting Wrapsody’s Summit American Yak Wrap and a Chance to Win Bijou Basin Ranch Yarn!

We're revisiting series 500 today on Tuned In To Knitting Daily TV, focusing on Kristin's very own design from her new book A Knitting Wrapsody, the Summit American Yak Wrap featured in episode 513. A knitted wrap with a unique reversible lace stitch pattern, you can knit along with Kristin and download the free pattern for this wrap here.

Watch Kristin demonstrate the Summit American Yak Wrap on episode 513's How To segment:

Here's Kristin to talk about the wrap, her latest book, and it's unique yarn from Bijou Basin Ranch:

A Knitting Wrapsody is a collection of knit patterns that are inspired by a variety of different crafts, including crochet, embroidery, weaving, painting, and even fishing.

The Summit cardi-wrap is made of thin strips of a reversible lace stitch pattern. What is interesting about this stitch pattern is that although it is reversible, it still has a right and wrong side. What makes it reversible is the fact that the repeat is 7 rows. Because the repeat has an odd number of rows, the right side will face one way on the first repeat, but face the opposite direction on the second repeat. The right side will face opposite every other repeat. The strips begin with an extremely loose cast on and end with a similar stretchy bind off. Each one uses yarn overs, which is done by design for the next step. The strips are joined together by picking up and knitting through 2 strips at the same time, and then bound off on a return row. This technique, along with a contrast yarn, gives a pretty “piped” textured edge to the fabric. Because of the special cast on and bind off techniques in the strips, we have perfectly spaced holes to use for picking up stitches for the joining technique. (The video above really demonstrates this well.)

The cardi-wrap is rectangular with sleeve openings so you can wear it in a variety of ways. Check out the video below, on location in Bijou Basin Ranch’s booth at TNNA Long Beach 2011, as I demonstrate how to wear it in a few ways.

I featured one of my favorite Bijou Basin Ranch yarns in A Knitting Wrapsody: Bijou Bliss. It is a 50/50 blend of American Yak and Cormo Wool. It is soft and lofty, and only gets softer with wear. Summit Wrap features the 2 naturally occurring colors of Bliss (cream and heathered brown). Now you can order Bijou Bliss in brilliant jewel tones hand dyed by Lorna’s Laces. Blush (the hot pink variety) is my favorite! I designed a few upcoming projects with this color. I’ll tell you more when the projects debut!

We want you to try Bijou Basin Ranch's lovely supply of yarn if you haven't already, so we're offering one lucky winner a dream supply of their yarn simply by telling us what you'd knit with the yarn if you won. Comment on this blog and let us know if you're going to tackle the Summit American Yak Wrap or another design, possibly from Kristin's A Knitting Wrapsody or a design that's been on your to-knit list for awhile. We'll randomly pick a winner next week Wednesday at noon Mountain Time, so be sure to comment before then for your chance to win the yarn pictured here!

The yarns that are being given to one lucky winner are:
Bijou Spun Himalayan Trail (75% yak down; 25% super fine merino) – 2 hanks, or 400 yards
Bijou Spun Mountain Treks (50% yak down; 50% alpaca) – 1 hank, or 250 yards
Bijou Spun Tibetan Dream (85% pure yak down; 15% nylon) – 2 hanks, 800 yards
Bijou Spun Fingering Weight (100% yak down) – 3 hanks, 300 yards
