5 Knitting Resolutions to Make in 2023

5 Knitting Resolutions for 2023
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

Making knitting resolutions is a great way to challenge yourself and explore new knitting techniques, but they can also cause stress if you make too many of them or set goals that are unattainable. That’s why this year, instead of knitting resolutions that will give you anxiety, we’re suggesting five knitting resolutions that won’t stress you out!

5 Knitting Resolutions

1. Try Something New

Maybe brioche is something you’ve admired for ages but have always been nervous to try. Or perhaps you’ve never cast on a pair of socks for fear of that dreaded heel turn (don’t worry, it’s not so bad). Make 2023 the year to give it a go!

And don’t wait until November to start, stressing yourself out all year long. Cast on this month and give yourself time and space to try.

2. Revisit Something Old

Did you have a bad experience with cables the first time you tried? Or maybe finishing that shawl took you so long that you vowed never again. This year, make a knitting resolution to revisit at least one of those knitting “nevers.”

Often when we try something for the first or even second time, we’re unsure, maybe a bit tense, and this can make a new technique seem ten times more difficult than it needs to be. Giving yourself grace and patience to revisit that dreaded technique a second or third time may turn your old “never” into your new favorite.

3. Check in with Your Stash

Yarn is gorgeous. It comes in all fibers and colors. And once you’ve bought it, it can be hard to let it go.

But it’s time to get it all out (maybe that weekend while you’re home alone?) and ask yourself of each and every skein: “Does this make me happy?” “Will I ever actually knit with it?”

If the answer is no to either question, thank it for joining your little family for a while and find it a new home.

4. Audit Your WIPs

We’ve all got one—that WIP literally stashed in the back of closet somewhere. But out of sight, does not mean out of mind. You know it’s still there, pressuring you to come back and finish it. But you just don’t want to. Maybe the fit isn’t right or the color is half a shade wrong or you can’t even describe what it is that puts you off.

That’s okay! Give yourself permission to call it quits. Frog it or give the project to someone who will enjoy finishing it. You’ll feel better for it!

5. Commit to No Pressure

Let’s remember that this is a craft to be enjoyed! It’s far too easy to make knitting resolutions that set us up for a no-win situation—stressing ourselves out to succeed or feeling failure when we didn’t knit all 23 items on our 2023 knitting bucket list.

Knit what brings you joy when it brings you joy. Cast on a new project, not because it’s next on the list, but because you can’t wait to get started on a new piece you know you’re going to love. Have fun with your knitting in 2023. That’s the most important knitting resolution you can make.
