Knits for Men: Top 5 Items I’d Knit for My Boyfriend

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

My boyfriend is a lover of knits. He would wear anything I could make him, if only he had the closet space for them. Unfortunately, he doesn’t. But maybe someday … so I’ve made a list of five of my favorite knits for men—I hope you love them as much as I do!

Sweaters for Him

Peavy Jacket by Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark

Peavy Jacket pattern to knit for men

In need of a project that will keep you nice and toasty? The Peavy Jacket, created by Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark is the one for you. The plaid design is made with stranded colorwork. This cardigan features a fold-over collar that adds personality to the piece, as well as saddle shoulders, set-in sleeves, and turned hems. This sweater is a cool-weather staple, and one of my favorite knits for men.

Cobblestone Pullover by Jared Flood

The Cobblestone Sweater is one of our favorite knits for men.

Designer Jared Flood visited Dublin, Ireland where he found inspiration for the versatile Cobblestone Pullover. The sweater can be dressed up easily or could be worn with jeans for a more casual look, making it a potentially perfect addition to my boyfriend’s already overflowing closet. The piece is effortless to style and is perfect for cool weather. The pullover is worked in garter stitch with a “rustic, tweedy wool” and features a garter yoke neckline and garter panels on the sides that add a twist to the classic wool sweater we know and love.

Sunchokes Pullover by Moira Engel

Sunchoke Pullover knitting pattern

The Sunchokes Pullover, designed by Moira Engel is not your ordinary pullover. The design includes a unique funnel neck with a tie to keep the wearer warm in cold months and features stunning cables in the front and back. Sunchokes is knit from the bottom up and worked back and forth. When making your list of knits for men, this one is a must.

Accessories for Him

Portsmouth Beanie by Jesie Ostermiller

The Portsmouth Beanie is in our top 5 list of knits for men.

I once thought that one could never have too many beanies until I saw my boyfriend’s collection. As much as I would love to make this for him, it probably wouldn’t be worn thanks to the many already taking up space in his closet. If you do have room in your closet, the versatility of beanies is unparalleled, and they can be worn through multiple seasons. The Portsmouth Beanie, created by Jesie Ostermiller, contains a lovely wave pattern above twisted ribbing. The piece is made from the bottom up. Choose a worsted-spun yarn to really show off the stitch motif.

Elusive Bias Socks by Katya Frankel

The Elusive Bias socks are a great unisex sock knitting pattern.

Just like the beanies, my boyfriend also has an endless number of socks. If he had the room, the Elusive Bias Socks, designed by Katya Frankel would be the perfect addition to his wardrobe. They look great especially peeking out of rolled-up jeans. These top-down, slip-stitch colorwork socks add a simple statement to any outfit.

Soon enough my knitting skills will be up to the task of making these patterns and my boyfriend will have to find space for them in his overflowing closet.
