Pattern of the Week: Whirlwind Top

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

I would wear leggings every day if I could, but it can be tough to bring the comfort of leggings into the workplace. I have a few arbitrary rules for myself around what tops it is appropriate to wear to work with leggings: haunches may be showing, for example, but neither butt seam nor crotch can be visible. Tunics like the lovely Whirlwind Top from knitscene Spring 2019 are wonderful to wear with leggings, elevating the look while not at all detracting from the feeling that I’m wearing PJs to work.

This instant classic from Amy Gunderson is easy to customize to whatever length makes you feel that your butt is covered, literally and figuratively. It’s worked in the round from the top down, so you can try it on as you go and keep knitting until the length is just right. A lovely lace pattern at the hem makes for a bit of a victory lap at the end of a quick-to-knit garment project.

I also love the subtle lace detail along the raglan armholes on the front and back, another thoughtful detail that adds just enough visual interest to the predominantly stockinette body. This project was created with ease and relaxation in mind. All that stockinette means that the body of the tunic will fly by like, well, a whirlwind!

Yours in Stitches,
Andrea
